Staff Position Description: Security Guard

Position Title: Security Guard
Position Code: Guard-8200

Reports to: Director of Security/Lead
Exempt Status: No

Position Purpose: All KHI employees are expected to perform their respective tasks and duties in such a way that supports KHI’s vision to be among the kindest, highest quality health systems in the country. This position is responsible for the protection, safeguarding and security of assets, personnel, customers, and all visitors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, staff, and hospital property.
  • Perform routine interior and exterior patrols to identify security, safety, or environmental risks.
  • Monitor and control access to facilities in accordance with hospital policies and visitor guidelines.
  • Respond promptly to security incidents, disturbances, and safety concerns using approved de‑escalation techniques.
  • Provide a visible security presence to deter unsafe behavior and promote a calm, respectful environment.
  • Assist with emergency response activities, including fire alarms, medical emergencies, and hospital safety codes.
  • Support patient safety initiatives, including elopement prevention and protection of vulnerable populations.
  • Enforce hospital policies and rules consistently and professionally.
  • Communicate effectively with hospital staff, leadership, and emergency responders during routine and emergency situations.
  • Prepare accurate and timely incident reports, logs, and required security documentation.
  • Operate hospital security systems and communication equipment in accordance with training and procedures.
  • Must be willing to travel to Hualapai Mountain Campus, SHMP Building, Mountain Shadow Building, or other KHI properties.
  • Responds to alarms.
  • Courier duties.
  • Other driving duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support overall effectiveness of department and organization.
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Certification/Licensure: Obtain and maintain an AZ Department of Public Safety (DPS) Unarmed Guard License.

  • Possession of a current and valid U.S. motor vehicle license. Be 21 years of age or older. Must remain eligible to drive per KHI driving policy.
  • De‑escalation training completion within 90 days of hire.
  • BLS within 90 days of hire (American Heart Association or American Red Cross only).
Knowledge And Skills
  • Knowledge of basic security, safety, and emergency response procedures.
  • Effective communication skills to interact professionally with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, situational awareness, and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills for incident reporting and routine communications.
  • Ability to operate security and surveillance systems.
  • Ability to work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Ability to remain calm and safely de‑escalate confrontational or high‑stress situations.
Preferences

Experience:

  • Prior private security or public law enforcement experience.
  • Hospital security experience.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Arizona security officer card.
  • International Association of Healthcare Security Certification and/or Safety as a Certified Healthcare Security Officer.

FEMA IS 100, 200, 700, and 800.

Special Position Requirements

Exposure Categories:

  • Category II: Expected duties have possible, but not routine, potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
  • Exposure to chemical, biological, and radioactive substances: Asbestos, Formaldehyde, Ethylene oxide, Mercury.
  • Possible routine exposure to hostile individuals: workplace violence.
Work Requirements
  • Must be able to stand and walk for 60% to 70% of the time; must be able to sit 30% to 40% of the time; must be able to run.
  • Must be able to distinguish phone rings and callers’ voices against regular background noise and conversation.
  • Occasionally bends, stoops, kneels, climbs, and descends ramps, stairs, ladders and reaches in the daily functions of duties.
  • Must be able to lift 40 to 50 pounds.
