Job summary

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas in Topeka, KS is seeking a full-time security guard to protect employees and the property of the company. The role requires prior law enforcement training and experience, including identifying and addressing safety risks with quick, decisive actions. Responsibilities

• Ensure the safety of employees and visitors.
• Respond to life-threatening situations with rapid, independent decision-making.
• Prevent unauthorized personnel from entering buildings and escort them away if necessary.
• Escort employees to their vehicles.
• Verify identification and eligibility of entrants.
• Patrol parking areas for safety.
• Check buildings after hours for security issues.
• Notify emergency personnel when needed.
• Monitor surveillance cameras from a desk.
• Provide incident reports.

Job Summary

The security guard has the responsibility of protecting the property and employees of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas. The position requires prior training and experience in law enforcement.

***These are full-time positions that will be scheduled Monday – Friday either 6:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. or 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

This position is located in our Topeka, KS office.

What you’ll do

• Ensure the safety of employees and all visitors. The role may involve responding to life-threatening situations that require rapid, independent decision-making rooted in prior law enforcement experience. Inaccurate decisions or actions could compromise safety and potentially lead to legal consequences.
• Prevent unauthorized personnel from entering the buildings or being on company property and escorting them away if necessary.
• Verify the identification and eligibility of all personnel entering a BCBSKS building.
• Patrol parking lots to provide safety for employees, visitors and property.
• Check company buildings and property after regular work hours for security and possible maintenance problems.
• Notify and if necessary, assist emergency personnel (police, fire and ambulance).
• Monitor surveillance cameras while at a desk.
• Escort employees to their vehicles as requested.
• Notify appropriate personnel of incoming calls by radio or phone.
• Notify appropriate maintenance department employees of heating/cooling/electrical issues. Either by sight or alarm at a monitoring station.
• Ticket vehicles that are improperly parked or do not have a company issued parking sticker displayed in the rear window.
• Provide expert report writing when documenting an incident.

What you’ll need

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Graduate from a certified Law enforcement academy required
• Associate’s degree preferred

Experience

• Minimum 3 years’ experience of law enforcement required
• Law enforcement experience within last 36 months preferred

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid Drivers License and insurable through the Company insurance policy required

Travel

• Minimal travel (0-10%) Possibly requested to fill in at the Lawrence office if the guard is on PTO.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must supply a personal firearm that is acceptable by security leadership. Must maintain and show proficiency with a firearm annually for term of employment in accordance with current state law or must show proficiency within 6 months of employment. This will be accomplished through the employee’s current agency, agency retired from, or a Blue Cross designated range master.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Demonstrate clear, effective communication skills.

Compensation

$21.46 - $26.83
Non-exempt, Grade 11
