Job summary

Everforth Apex is seeking a Security Control Assessor in Alexandria, VA to evaluate, test, and validate security controls within information systems, with RMF emphasis. You will develop A&A artifacts, SARs, SSPs, and POA&Ms, and guide remediation actions through authorization.

You will perform risk-based assessments, vulnerability analysis, and collaborative security activities with ISSOs and system owners to ensure compliant, secure operations.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent years of relevant experience.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance.
  • 5+ years of experience in a Security Control Assessor role.
  • DoD 8570 IAT II certification or equivalent.
  • Experience with RMF, A&A documentation, and vulnerability analysis.
  • Experience with cloud-based controls and RMF assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored documentation to support security authorization processes.
  • Plan and execute security control assessments for information systems.
  • Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of security controls to identify risks.
  • Prepare Security Assessment Reports and advise on SSPs and POA&Ms.
  • Perform access controls, interpret findings, and push systems through authorization.
  • Conduct vulnerability scanning and RMF-based compliance operations.
  • Verify remediation actions and conduct follow-up assessments.
  • Collaborate with system owners, ISSOs, and stakeholders throughout assessments.

Security Control Assessor

Location: Alexandria, Virginia (Onsite)

Role Overview

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Security Control Assessor to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating, testing, and validating the effectiveness of security controls within information systems and networks, with a strong emphasis on applying the Risk Management Framework (RMF). This role requires strong experience in RMF execution, creating documentation for Assessment and Authorization (A&A), vulnerability analysis, and remediation validation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide tailored documentation to support security authorization processes.
  • Plan and execute security control assessments for various information systems.
  • Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented security controls to identify vulnerabilities, weaknesses, and potential risks.
  • Prepare detailed Security Assessment Reports (SARs) and provide expert advice on System Security Plans (SSPs) and Plans of Action and Milestones (POA&Ms).
  • Perform access controls, interpret findings, write artifacts, and help push systems through the authorization process.
  • Conduct vulnerability scanning and compliance operations, with a strong understanding of the RMF process.
  • Verify the implementation of remediation actions and conduct follow-up assessments.
  • Validate security control implementation and provide test results for continuous monitoring.
  • Collaborate with system owners, ISSOs, and other stakeholders throughout the assessment process.
Required Qualifications

Education: A BA/BS degree or equivalent years of relevant experience is required.

Clearance: Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DOW Secret Clearance.

Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience in a Security Control Assessor role.

Technical Skills:

  • A DoD 8570 IAT II certification is required (e.g., CCNA Security, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, Security+ CE, CND, or SSCP).
  • Hands-on experience with eMASS or similar Information Assurance tools.
  • Experience analyzing vulnerability scans and with STIG implementation.
  • Strong understanding of RMF, with experience in both assessments and documentation.
  • Experience with assessing and validating controls in any cloud-based technology.
  • Knowledge of relevant frameworks and standards such as NIST SP 800-53, DoD 8500/8510, and DHS 4300 A/B.
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills for interacting with ISSOs and stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • An understanding of the Systems Development Lifecycle (SDLC), particularly the DHS Systems Engineering Lifecycle (SELC) process.
  • Experience researching, writing, and submitting complete documentation packages for new system authorizations.
