Job summary

Powerhouse Arts is seeking a part-time Security and Safety Associate to serve as FLSD and represent the organization at the Security Desk. The role reports to the Security and Safety Administrator and includes emergency, fire safety, and security responsibilities in a Brooklyn, NY environment.

The ideal candidate will have a NYS Security Guard License, FDNY certifications (F89/T89/Z89), and readiness to complete on-site testing after three months.

Qualifications

• 2-3 years holding a FLSD License, with at least 5 years working in security; background in a major cultural institution is a plus.
• Possession of a valid NYS Security Guard License.
• Must hold FDNY F89, T89, or Z89 certification (with Z89 acceptable if combined with 3+ years of fire and life safety experience).
• Valid 8 and 16 Hour NYS Required Training Certificates.
• Preparedness to take on-site certifying test after 3 months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Monitor the Fire Alarm Control Panel and respond to alarms (fire, supervisory, trouble).
• Maintain fire alarm logbooks and daily entries as required.
• Execute the Comprehensive Fire Safety and Emergency Action Plan during emergencies.
• Coordinate with the Fire Command Station and FDNY, EMS and other first responders.
• Perform routine inspections and testing of life safety equipment (extinguishers, exit signs, emergency lighting, sprinklers).
• Coordinate with the Engineering Team for scheduled inspections of fire alarm and suppression systems.
• Monitor CCTV for suspicious activities and conduct safety inspections of the facility and grounds.
• Respond to safety-related issues with Facilities and Public Safety.
• Liaise with building personnel, FDNY, and NYPD during emergencies; provide clear announcements and maintain logs.

Powerhouse Arts (PHA) is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Located in a purpose-built facility in Brooklyn, PHA convenes an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well‑being of artists and the communities to which they belong. PHA offers fabrication programs in ceramics, print, and public art; alongside membership studios in ceramics and at MGC Community Print Studio, textile workshop, The Alpha Workshops; and spaces for education, events, and public engagement.

Powerhouse Arts is seeking a part-time Security and Safety Associate to join our team. This individual will serve as an FLSD and represent the organization at the Security Desk. This position reports to the Security and Safety Administrator.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Emergency & Fire Safety Operations

• Monitor the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) continuously and respond to all alarms (fire, supervisory, trouble).
• Maintain fire alarm logbooks and make daily entries when required.
• Execute the building's Comprehensive Fire Safety and Emergency Action Plan during emergencies.
• Report to the Fire Command Station and coordinate with FDNY, EMS, and other first responders.
• Perform routine fire drills, inspections, and testing of life safety equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, exit signs, emergency lighting, sprinkler systems).
• Coordinate with the Engineering Team for scheduled inspections of fire alarm and suppression systems.

Security & Surveillance

• Monitor CCTV for suspicious or concerning activities.
• Conduct regular visual inspections of the facility and surrounding grounds to identify fire and safety hazards.
• Respond to safety-related issues in coordination with Facilities and Public Safety.

Communication & Coordination

• Act as a liaison with building personnel, FDNY, and NYPD during emergencies.
• Provide clear announcements and direct personnel actions during emergencies.
• Maintain accurate daily logs, fire records, and warden sign-in sheets.
• Offer professional, customer-service-oriented interactions with staff, guests, and during special events.

Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $25-28/hr.The shifts available for this position will Sundays, 4pm-12am + open availability/flexibility between 8am-4pm, 4pm-12am & 12am-8am.
