Job description

What You Will Do:

You are the kind of engineering student who can’t help pulling things apart to see exactly how they work. You're probably involved in cybersecurity and coding clubs, understand the term “white hat” does not refer to \"black-tie events\", and you definitely have a pile of dismantled electronic devices in the corner dedicated to personal projects. If that sounds like you, welcome to Secure System Engineering; the intersection of Systems, Software, and Safety Engineering.

The Embedded Product Cybersecurity Engineering team is seeking a Secure System Engineer Intern for Summer 2027. Our shared services team supports product development across the company wherever a customer has a security requirement, or when a system will be exposed to cyber threats through connectivity or operational use over public networks. Members of our team help develop cyber-resilient systems by supporting design and implementation teams to ensure a Secure System Development Lifecycle (SSDLC). We also develop tools and testing techniques for integration and verification, helping identify residual defects in design or implementation that could negatively impact the confidentiality, availability, or integrity of a system. This is an onsite position. Located in WINDSOR LOCKS. Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident Assist with developing and executing fuzzing and penetration tests to evaluate attack surface robustness. Develop threat models and data flow diagrams to ensure data is properly isolated in transit and at rest. Implement mandatory access controls (MAC) through the development of SELinux policies. Participate in code reviews to identify weaknesses in the implementation of security functions. Conduct vulnerability assessments on proposed and in-service systems. Develop and improve tools and scripts that enhance the overall efficacy of the Embedded Product Cybersecurity team.

What You Will Learn:

The stages and practical application of the Collins Aerospace Secure Systems Development Lifecycle. The day-to-day operations and responsibilities of a cybersecurity engineer. Practical experience in security testing methodologies, emphasizing fuzzing techniques. Advanced skills in developing Python scripts and tools to automate and enhance cybersecurity workflows. The end-to-end process of developing threat models and securing data through strict isolation and access controls.

Qualifications You Must Have:

Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in an applicable discipline and actively ++enrolled through completion of the internship / co-op session. Must have a minimum of 60 hours of credit by the start of the internship / co-op session. Solid understanding of fundamental cybersecurity principles. High proficiency in Python programming. Familiarity with Linux operating systems. Basic knowledge of network protocols and secure architectures.

Qualifications We Prefer:

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a demonstrated passion for the field. Completed coursework or personal projects focusing on embedded systems security. Experience with embedded system integration and testing. Understanding of IP networking architectures and concepts. Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git). Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Tool Suite.

What We Offer:

Our values drive our actions, behaviors, and performance with a vision for a safer, more connected world. At RTX we value: Trust, Respect, Accountability, Collaboration, and Innovation.
