Job Overview

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing high‑quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees and a water supply system based on 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes across a 2,000 square‑mile watershed. The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) is responsible for a portfolio of capital projects valued at over $48 billion. This position is in BEDC’s In‑House Design (IHD) Directorate‑ Architectural Section, located in Queens, NY, and is open only to qualified internal city employees with permanent civil‑service status as an Administrative Architect.

Responsibilities
  • Perform high‑level architectural duties for critical and complex aspects of assigned projects.
  • Oversee staff development to meet project scope requirements.
  • Review and comment on designs produced by staff.
  • Sign and seal drawings and specifications with a registered architect seal.
  • Conduct and oversee the preparation of plans and specifications for building elevations, floor plans, site landscaping, fencing/screens, and paving.
  • Liaise with operating bureaus and other agency stakeholders to ensure proper execution of work.
  • Establish standards, specifications, and design criteria based on industry standards.
  • Stay current on changing regulations and technology.
  • Lead selected projects as a project lead.
  • Review and/or oversee staff review of designs prepared by outsourced architectural and engineering firms.
  • Perform administrative functions, including evaluations, time and leave approvals, staff planning, and hiring processes.
Preferred Skills
  • Analytical ability, comprehensive architectural knowledge, and sound judgment.
  • Experience in planning, layout, and detailing of architectural drawings, specifications, shop‑drawing review, field inspections, and investigations.
  • Experience in architectural design, planning, and layout for complex projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain and deconstruct complex architectural details.
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills, including MS Office, AutoCAD, and Revit.
  • Valid Driver’s License in the state of New York (may be required for some assignments).
  • 7–10 years of experience leading and supervising a design team.
  • Experience coordinating projects with engineering and other disciplines.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid New York State Registration as an architect.
  • Six (6) years of full‑time paid experience in architectural work, with at least two (2) years as an administrative architect.
  • Eligibility for the 55‑A Program is recognized.
