Role Overview:

Under supervision of the Director of Clinical Documentation Integrity, and sometimes the Clinical Documentation Integrity Manager, collaborating with physicians, nursing, and HIM coders, the Second Level Reviewer I facilitates and ensures quality physician documentation for clinical conditions or procedures. This supports accurate severity of illness, risk of mortality, and care complexity. The role involves educating the care team on documentation guidelines, adhering to departmental standards, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Active participation in customer service and maintaining respectful relationships are essential.

Team Contributions:

• Reviews medical records for documentation compliance, completeness, and accuracy regarding severity of illness and risk of mortality
• Ensures timely and accurate record review and data entry into CDI Software
• Supports CDI documentation strategies through ongoing education and use of educational tools and webinars

Qualifications:

• Five years of acute care nursing experience in medical/surgical, ICU, post-acute, or Emergency Department settings
• BSN and 3 years of Clinical Documentation Specialist experience OR
• 4 years of recent Clinical Documentation Specialist experience OR
• Less than 2 years of CDI experience with 10 years of acute care nursing experience
• Current active license as RN, Nurse Practitioner, Physician’s Assistant, or a graduate meeting ECFMG requirements
• CCDS or CDIP certification and 2 years of CDI experience
