Brown University is seeking a Second Cook to join the Dining Services team. This role requires producing and serving daily menus and catered functions, under general supervision, while guiding and training junior staff. The position emphasizes baking techniques, desserts, and adherence to safety standards. Onsite work with full-time hours and Summer off provisions apply.

  • Attains and maintains RI Food Safety Certification

  • Demonstrates the highest standards of quality, sanitation, andsafety.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee isroutinely required to stand for extended periods; walk; sit, bend;stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl use hands to finger, handle, slice,dice, chop, or feel objects, knives, tools or controls on kitchenequipment; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; smell, talk orhear.
  • Must occasionally lift or move products and supplies, up to 50pounds.
  • Push and/or pull carts weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include closevision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjustfocus.
  • Must consistently utilize all Personal Protective Equipment perBrown Dining Services guidelines
  • Must wear a cut resistance glove whenever using a sharp orpotentially sharp tool or instrument.
  • Frequently moves about campus to various locations for cateredevents.
  • Ability to tolerate heat and cold temperatures.
TASK DESCRIPTION:

As a member of a production team and under general supervision,performs a variety of functions related to the production andservice of the menu of the day and catered functions with minimalsupervision, and guides and trains lower classification productionstaff as needed.

Typical tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs tasks and responsibilities described in "Cook"position description at a higher level, and with minimalsupervision.
  • Anticipates needs and assures availability of raw products fordaily and future production as assigned.
  • Assures production is timely and completed as close to serviceas possible.
  • Possesses a developed a sense of the overall productionscheduling of the unit, task status, and service requirements, andassists others as needed.
  • Improves skills by learning and practicing the skills andresponsibilities of a First Cook.
  • Guides and trains lower classification employees in taskaccomplishment.
  • Assumes responsibility of production subsystems, includingcatering.
  • Assists in basic dessert preparation.
  • Maintains a neat, well-groomed, professional appearance.
  • Performs other tasks as requested.

This position works 40 hours per week/ 41 weeks per year with 11consecutive weeks off during the summer
