The City of High Point is currently seeking a Parks Maintenance Groundskeeper (Seasonal) that performs routine skilled and semi-skilled work performing grounds and/or landscape maintenance involving the use of specialized equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Crew Supervisor.

Regular daytime hours are Monday-Friday, 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, with an occasional night, weekend, or holiday as needed. Working July 4this required.

Essential Tasks

  • Performs basic turf maintenance and plant care including litter pick-up, lifting and emptying trash and garbage cans, cleaning of restrooms
  • Cleans and washes grounds equipment after use;
  • Performs regular maintenance of grounds including preparation of and addition to grounds involving mowing, raking, weed eating, trimming, digging, planting of trees, shrubs and flowers, etc.;
  • Uses chemicals including herbicides and pesticides under direction of supervisor;
  • Prunes and mulches trees, shrubs and flowers, cuts down and removes dead trees, weeds and waters flower beds;
  • Hand grades, seeds, fertilizes and sods turf areas;
  • Assists in regular and preventive maintenance of landscape facility including painting of building;
  • Washes and cleans vehicles used to transport employees, equipment, tools and supplies;
  • Enforces that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • Must have valid appropriate driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be 18 years of age. Must be able to perform manual labor for long periods of time in all weather conditions. Employee may be required to work weekends and holidays. Efficiency in operating turf equipment a plus.

  • Formal education which includes basic arithmetic with completion of high school diploma or GED supplemented by experience in grounds keeping using the trade tools and equipment is desirable.

Physical Requirements

Talking and/or Hearing: (Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word). (Hearing - Perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Both necessary to converse with employees working together to accomplish tasks. Must be able to hear over noise of motors to respond in the event there is a mechanical warning or verbal warning during operation of equipment.

Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:

The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. Recommended guidelines for vision are:

  • Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see other workers from a distance for safety reasons when cutting down trees, etc. Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected
  • Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see various plants, chemicals, paint brushes, and other work aids close at hand. Both eyes 20/22 corrected
  • Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same time. Depth Perception - 4
  • Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Must be able to see wide span to cover entire work area to observe people entering and leaving to assure safety.
  • Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check entire work area. Must be able to adjust the lens of eye to glance quickly at equipment or customers who are located at varying distances.

  • Medium to Heavy Work: Exerting considerable force constantly in operation of work tools and equipment. Physical demand requirements usually require walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting, and stretching, although worker does sit on rare. There is significant use of arms, hands, feet and legs. Reaching, Handling, and Fingering: (Reaching - Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction). (Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands (fingers not involved). (Fingering - Picking, pinching, punching or otherwise working with fingers primarily (rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling). All are requirements of this job.   • Using Arithmetic: Ability to use arithmetic to figure measurements and distances and in preparing proper amounts of chemicals to be used.

Language Ability

  • Read: Ability to read manuals, instructions, blueprints, directions, and other documents related to the job.
  • Write: Ability to write figures and make various reports.
  • Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions with other employees and the supervisor.

Environmental Conditions

Physical Surroundings

  • The worker is subject to Outside Environmental Conditions. Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Since this is primarily a seasonal job performed during the summer, the weather is usually hot and at times extremely hot. Combining the type of work performed with the weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work outside in a hot environment. The position is best suited for someone who doesn't mind getting wet, dirty and sweaty.

Hazards

  • Employee will be exposed to chemicals and fertilizers associated with grounds work, trash, garbage, paint, paint thinner, and cleaning products. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.

Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids

  • Grounds Maintenance: Buckets, trash bags, litter stick, rake, shovel, broom, blower, trash cans, push mower, string trimmer, edger, swing blade cutters, and vacuum.
  • Facility Maintenance: Chemical cleaners, water hoses, bowl brushes, brooms, shovels, paint, scrapers, wire brushes, paint brushes, paint thinner, paint roller, and ladder.
  • Loading and Unloading Truck: Fertilizer and lime bags, bleachers, and supplies.
  • Basic Turf and Landscape Maintenance: Shovels, rakes, picks, seed forks, pitch forks, hoes, water hoses, wheelbarrows, and seed spreaders
