Western Region – Green Ridge State Forest, Flintstone, MD

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting applications for Seasonal Maintenance Assistant positions located at Green Ridge State Forest in Flintstone, Maryland. Work entails performing independently moderately complex tasks in maintenance work, including routine construction work, campsite maintenance, rendering routine preventive maintenance, and making minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways. Other duties may include but are not limited to: snow removal, planting trees, operating chainsaws, habitat improvement projects and boundary line maintenance. May be required to work weekends and/or holidays. Short term and ten-month contracts are available.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience:
Experience operating small equipment such as mowers and chainsaws.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Working knowledge of operation and maintenance of heavy equipment such as bulldozers, plows, large trucks, etc; of conservation principles and practices.
Elementary knowledge of agricultural practices of the more common species of plant life and wildlife indigenous to the state and its geography; of fire suppression practices.
Ability to supervise work crews; to carry out orders and instructions; to work independently on specialized assignments; to work effectively with fellow workers; to deal with the general public.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons in this position may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
