The Lifeguard is responsible for the supervision, control, and safety of all participants during any pool activity through preventative guarding methods.
Qualifications:
- Lifeguard must hold current Red Cross and/or YMCA Lifeguard certification or comparable national cert.
- Lifeguard must be certified in CPR for the Pro Rescuer and First Aid.
- Must be at least 16 years of age and in high school or graduated.
- Must be able to complete any and all required trainings and employee application process as well as any other required certifications as the job progresses.
- Must be able to make sound decisions in a stressful aquatics environment.
- Lifting up to 100 pounds may be required.
- Working around chemicals may be required.
Required Tasks:
- Remain alert with no lapses in consciousness.
- Sit for extended periods in elevated chair or standing at edge of deck while on duty.
- Move to various locations, including in and around elevated chair.
- Communicate verbally, including projecting his/her voice across distances, and communicate swiftly and effectively with emergency personnel over the phone and in person.
- Hear noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment with background noise.
- Swim 300 continuous yards of freestyle and breaststroke.
- Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember.
- Operate as a team with other lifeguards and YMCA staff as well as independently.
Responsibilities:
- Provide supervision and high safety standard during all swimming activities.
- Administer swim tests, place and care for Swim-safe bands.
- Assist in maintaining cleanliness of pool, deck, and locker rooms.
- Participate in monthly in-service training and any other activities pertinent to position.
- Maintain current Lifeguard, CPR PRO, and First Aid certifications.
- Test the PH, free chlorine level, and water temperature.
- Engage in positive relations with members and guests.
- Know all emergency procedures.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude at all times.
- Report for duty on time and be prepared to guard.
- No eating meals, reading, phone use, or studying on duty.
- Perform designated tasks in a timely manner.
- Secure a sub in the event of illness or emergency and notify Supervisor(s).
- Perform any additional tasks as delegated by Aquatics Director, Coordinator, or Head Guard for the overall benefit of Aquatic Department and YMCA.
