Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service, is recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual lifeguard positions for the 2025 season at Cunningham Falls State Park. Contract duration will be approximately from Memorial Day to Labor Day, depending on specific needs. You must indicate your position(s) of interest on the Supplemental Questionnaire to be considered. Review the duties of each position series HERE: Lifeguard Series, Lifeguard, Lake/Pool Lifeguard, Lead Lake/Pool.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Must be currently certified by a national agency in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR, and pass a physical evaluation, swim test, and written test (upload certificates). Certification must be obtained before employment; employment is contingent upon certification three weeks prior to hire date.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least 18 years old.
  • At least two months of lifeguarding experience.
  • Preference for Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.
  • In pool settings, preference for certification as a Pool or Spa Operator approved by the Maryland Department of Health and the local county.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees may be required to operate a motor vehicle, UTV, or golf cart. A valid Maryland driver’s license with five points or fewer is required; provisional licenses are not accepted.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Selected candidates may undergo background checks, including employment references, education verification, driving record, and criminal history including fingerprinting. Continued employment depends on passing these checks.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees working 30+ hours/week may be eligible for health benefits, paying 25% of premiums. Other benefits include dental, accidental death, and life insurance, with premiums paid in full by the employee. Leave accrual is possible after 120 days of work, up to 40 hours per year.* Benefits details will be discussed at hire.
