SEASONAL HORTICULTURIST WORKER
**Hiring Range:** $17.50 – $19.50 per hour

About the Position: The City of Grand Junction is accepting applications for a parks horticulturist to help implement landscape renovations, manage the greenhouse program, and maintain citywide landscapes. This role offers an exciting opportunity to join our growing parks maintenance team. Our landscapes are part of a larger parks system comprising 121 acres of horticulture areas, 350 acres of developed parks, 111 acres of cemetery, 55 acres of school grounds, and over 598 acres of open space.

About Grand Junction Parks and Recreation Department: We manage 36 developed parks, over 900 acres of open space, 21 miles of trails, and numerous landscape beds. Many parks offer year-round amenities such as restrooms and shelters. Join a dynamic team dedicated to creating memorable experiences for visitors.

What You’ll Do:

  1. Maintain city landscapes including medians, rights of way, gardens, beds, hardscapes, perennials, and shrubs.
  2. Apply and record chemical treatments such as herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, and bio-controls.
  3. Assist with watering, pruning, seeding, weeding, propagating, fertilizing, and maintaining plants.
  4. Help keep the downtown corridor clean through trash removal, power washing, graffiti and fountain cleaning, snow removal, and other duties.
  5. Operate equipment like skid loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, tractors, hedge trimmers, mowers, and trimmers.
  6. Update, improve, and renovate assigned properties under the supervision of the Horticulture crew leader.

This is a safety-sensitive position; therefore, you will be subject to random drug screenings.

What We’re Looking For:

  1. Must be 18 years or older.
  2. Ability to pass a drug screen, background check, and physical examination if required.
  3. Ability to work outdoors all day with a strong work ethic.
  4. Experience with yard maintenance tools is preferred but training will be provided.
  5. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver license.
  6. High school diploma or G.E.D.; other combinations of experience and education may be considered.
