Job summary

Serving Seniors in San Diego is seeking a Seasonal Food Service Driver to pick up prepared meals and deliver to homebound seniors and eligible individuals with disabilities. The driver will perform wellness checks and share program information during deliveries.

The role requires safe driving within defined routes, temperature control, and collaboration with the Nutrition team. Schedule is Mon–Fri, full-time day hours, paying $20 per hour.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Valid California Driver's License with clean driving record.
• Minimum of 2–4 years of related experience; AA/AS degree may substitute for experience.
• Experience working with older adults preferred.
• Experience delivering meals preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine duties related to loading and delivering meals to home-delivered, congregate, and to-go sites.
• Deliver meals to seniors on assigned routes and maintain temperature control from kitchen to delivery.
• Conduct wellness checks and connect clients with health and social services as needed.
• Maintain vehicle safety, records, and adhere to traffic laws; assist with basic vehicle maintenance.

Job Purpose

The Home Delivered Meal (HDM) Driver picks up prepared meals from the kitchen and delivers the meals to homebound elderly and eligible persons with disabilities, in defined geographic areas. The driver also delivers bulk and pre-trayed meals to congregate and to-go dining sites. Meal delivery service includes a brief wellness check and distribution of program or nutrition information. Drivers must ensure driving safety while out on delivery routes and be observant of all relevant posted signs and rules. The HDM service helps program recipients to maintain their independence and avoid premature institutionalization.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of routine duties related to the loading and delivery of meals for home-delivered and congregate and to-go dining sites.
• Delivers food to seniors on assigned routes.
• Picks up and transports food from an off-site storage facility to on-site storage.
• Takes and maintains temperature control standards at pick-up from kitchen, loading into vehicle, and delivery.
• Conduct wellness checks and connect clients with Serving Seniors Health and Social Services team, and other referral partners as needed.
• Build positive meaningful rapport with clients.
• As a mandated reporter for Elder Abuse, report any suspicious circumstances or suspected abuse to Adult Protective Services
• Maintain routine records related to delivery and food service duties.
• Performs daily safety inspection of vehicles and operates vehicles to and from the central kitchen.
• Obeys traffic laws and observes defensive driving practices.
• Wash, fuel, and perform minor preventive maintenance of assigned vehicles.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education And Experience

• High School diploma or equivalent
• A valid California Driver's License and clean driving record
• Minimum of 2 - 4 years of related experience; AA/AS degree in lieu of experience.
• Experience working with older adults preferred
• Experience working in delivery preferred

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• Operation of light vehicles and basic vehicle maintenance procedures.
• Obeys all applicable signs of the road, as well as engages in safe, defensive driving techniques.
• Basic record-keeping methods applicable to delivery functions.
• Sanitation and safety practices in the transport, handling and preparation of food.
• Cleaning and sanitation methods used in a food service environment.

Work Conditions

• Onsite position
• Position is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds.
• Requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
