Job summary

ITRCC is seeking a Seasonal Equipment Operator/Laborer to support highway maintenance across Portage, IN. You will follow detailed instructions and operate equipment safely while assisting in routine tasks on the road.

The role requires a High school diploma or GED, a Class B CDL with air brake endorsement, and prior roadwork or snow plow experience; training in safety and equipment will be provided.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ability to read and understand measurements.
• Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required.
• 1–2 years of general roadwork experience.
• Snow plowing experience preferred.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance practices.
• Certificate in welding, bucket truck, backhoe and forklift.

Responsibilities

• Performs highway maintenance tasks safely and complies with safety requirements.

• Performs similar maintenance activities as full-time labor positions when trained.
• Complete pre-trip vehicle inspection.
• Occasionally serve as a patrol vehicle for incident response and motorist aid.

• Pick up trash and debris.
• Maintain fleet vehicles and equipment to a safe standard.

Summary:

The Seasonal Equipment Operator/ Laborer receives detailed instructions before and during work to perform a variety of highway maintenance duties. Caution must be exercised in operating highway maintenance equipment in order to prevent damage to equipment or injury to employees and the motoring public.

Position is not eligible for a modified or hybrid work schedule.

Relationships:

• Works either independently or with a crew of employees.
• Frequent contact with the motoring public, Indiana State Police and other ITR department personnel.

Responsibilities:

• Performs all tasks safely, complies with all internal and external safety requirements, supports ITRCC's safety culture, attends all safety trainings, and completes all compliance trainings as required by ITRCC.

• Performs similar maintenance activities as full time labor positions provide the incumbent is properly trained.
• Complete pre-trip vehicle inspection.
• Periodic assignment as a patrol vehicle for incident response and motorist aid.

• Fix signs and guardrail.
• Pick up trash and debris.
• Conduct inventory of supplies.
• Required to maintain fleet vehicles and equipment to an acceptable standard and to operate in a safe an efficient manner.
• Complete all training that is required.
• All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: (required)

• High school diploma/ GED
• Ability to read and understand measurements
• Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement
• 1-2 years of general roadwork experience
• Previous snow plowing experience
• Working knowledge of highway maintenance practices
• Certificate in welding, bucket truck, back hoe and forklift
