Job summary

County of Anoka is offering a Seasonal Engineering Assistant - Design Intern position for Spring/Summer 2027 at the Anoka County Highway Building in Andover, MN.

You will support the Design Engineering team with day-to-day design tasks, project management activities, and mentorship from experienced engineers. The role provides real-world exposure to engineering principles and construction planning in a county setting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be at least 17 years of age at time of hire.
• Must be currently enrolled in a civil technology, construction management, or civil engineering degree program or related field.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Successfully pass criminal history and driver's license background check.

Responsibilities

• Assist project managers and project engineers with project development activities.
• Assist in the preparation of project documents, technical memos and reports.
• Assist Design Engineering with CAD design and spreadsheet design tasks.
• Assist in the preparation and review of construction plans
• Complete preliminary scoping activities.

Position Description

The Anoka County Transportation Division's vision is to enhance and protect life by providing safe roads and reducing traffic congestion. The highway department has an opening for a Seasonal Engineering Assistant - Design Intern for Spring/Summer 2027, who will support the Design Engineering team on a variety of tasks that contribute to county transportation projects.

This position offers an excellent learning experience for students pursuing a career in civil or transportation engineering. Interns will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced design engineers, assisting them with day-to-day design tasks and project management activities. Throughout the season, staff will take time to teach and mentor the intern on the role of a design engineer in the transportation field, providing real world exposure to engineering principles, design processes, and project development workflows.

This is a seasonal, non-exempt, on-site position. The anticipated start date for this position is around April/May 2027. Interviews will take place as applications are received for those selected to move forward in the hiring process.

Pay & Benefits

Salary: $22.00 to $24.00 per hour.

Work Location

This position will work at the Anoka County Highway Building, located at 1440 Bunker Lake Blvd NW, Andover MN 55304.

Expected work hours are Monday - Friday, work hours will vary.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

• Standard office environment, various county work sites both indoor and outdoor, including unfinished structures, construction sites, rough terrain, and changing weather conditions depending on assignment.
• Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness.
• Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
• Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties.
• Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills.
• Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing.
• Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment.
• Regular lifting of 0-25 pounds, occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds.
