Job summary

City of Stamford is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator for the Office of Operations. You will operate refuse packers, dump trucks and other heavy vehicles, performing routine maintenance and ensuring safe, on-time collections on assigned routes.

This role requires a valid CDL, good health, and the ability to work with diverse teams. You will lead helpers, follow written and oral instructions, and adhere to traffic and safety regulations while maintaining equipment.

Qualifications

• Must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and good physical health to perform duties.
• Knowledge of operation and minor maintenance of heavy vehicular equipment.
• Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Familiarity with traffic rules and safety regulations.

Job description

Under the general supervision of a supervisor, performs skilled and unskilled manual work and operates heavy equipment such as refuse packers, snow plows and other equipment as assigned in the Office of Operations; performs minor maintenance on assigned equipment; does related work as required.

• Performs related duties as required.
• Operates refuse packers, dump trucks, and other heavy equipment and utility vehicles used in the collection and carting of solid waste material.
• Checks before operating and during the work period, oil and other lubrication levels, tire pressure and general condition of vehicle.
• Operates snowplows, sanders and other heavy equipment when needed in the Road Maintenance

Division.

• Directs the work of helpers assigned to a particular collection route.
• Assists mechanic in overhauling operations.
• Follows assigned collection route on a schedule.
• Uses safety precautions in the operations of the equipment.
• Advises superior of unusual conditions which may require more specialized attention.
• Loads and unloads materials and supplies.

• Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Good knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of heavy vehicular equipment.
• Working knowledge of traffic and safety rules and regulations.
