Summary Of Function
Responsible for providing leadership and ensuring a safe and instructive environment for the City of Oak Park's state licensed summer day camp and Mobile Recreation programs.
Description
- Provide a safe and healthy environment for a diverse group of program participants.
- Works directly with Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, and Mobile Recreation Supervisor
- Organizes and directs daily activities with campers.
- Arrange special events, crafts, and onsite programs.
- Handle emergency situations in a calm and efficient manner.
- Report any situations immediately to the Camp Director.
- Attend mandatory weekly staff meetings.
- Attend mandatory pre-camp staff training.
- Participate in special events and professional development activities.
- Create and maintain a clean, safe, healthy, educational, and fun camp environment.
- Be actively involved in quality interactions with children throughout the day providing particular attention to the physical and emotional security of each child.
- Ability to provide a caring environment and serve as an effective role model to children, co-workers, and parents.
- Maintain an inventory of program supplies.
- When working with Mobile Recreation, counselors will be responsible for traveling to various parks around the City of Oak Park to engage participants in various recreation activities, including games, arts and crafts, playground activities, sports, etc.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to provide quality customer service.
- All staff are required to work on the 4th of July for the city-wide Independence Day Celebration.
- May be asked to perform other duties related to the day-to-day operation of the department.
Knowledge Skills And Abilities
- Ability to play, organize and coordinate a variety of camp activities including games, arts & crafts, special events, tournaments, songs and field trips.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the community and parents.
- Must be physically able to perform duties as assigned.
- Initiative and resourcefulness in problem solving.
Education And Training
- Aquatic experience preferred.
- Previous experience in camp or childcare setting preferred.
- Possess First Aid/ CPR Certification (Certification available thru the City of Oak Park)
Special Working Conditions
- Must have initiative, enthusiasm, and a passion for working with children.
- Be available for all dates of assignment.
- Willingness to wear a bathing suit and be comfortable in chest-deep water.
- Must be available to work, days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Drives, fuels, and cares for a City vehicle used in the Mobile Recreation program. (Must follow all City policies regarding use of City vehicles)
- Ability to lift equipment of at least 25 pounds.
SALARY RANGE - This is a temporary/seasonal position (May through November) with an hourly minimum rate of $15.00 (with consideration given to experience)
