Job description

Under direction, operates and makes minor repairs to stationary steam boilers or steam generators and auxiliary boiler equipment. Responsibilities include:

  • Firing stationary boilers used in generating power to supply steam to heating plants, turbines, and other steam-powered equipment.
  • Lubricating motors and equipment bearings.
  • Manipulating valves to control the operation of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges.
  • Checking water levels and testing the low water feed control (LWFCO).
  • Performing bottom blowdowns per shift.
  • Maintaining fires in the boilers at proper thickness and regulating draft for efficiency.
  • Repairing, maintaining, and installing grate units, tubes, caps, and turbining boilers.
  • Measuring and recording fuel usage.
  • Washing boiler and pump rooms, and maintaining cleanliness, safety, and orderliness.
  • Making emergency repairs and ensuring equipment operates correctly.
  • Testing boiler water for hardness, acidity, and alkalinity; operating water conditioning equipment.
  • Safeguarding and properly using equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Keeping records of fuel consumption, pressure, draft, temperature, and steam flow.
  • Operating and maintaining air conditioning and refrigeration equipment (if applicable).
  • Cleaning furnace rooms, flues, and surrounding areas.
  • Monitoring blowers, motors, and regulators, reporting issues promptly.
  • Reporting damages or breakages to furnaces or heaters.
  • Notifying relevant personnel of operational issues or low fuel supply.
  • Adjusting drafts, oils, pumps, motors, and other boiler room equipment.
  • Performing seasonal cleaning, painting, and minor repairs.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and safety in the work environment.
  • Learning to operate electronic/manual recording and computerized systems.
Requirements

Possession of a boiler operator’s license of the appropriate grade and type issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor. Valid driver’s license in New Jersey if vehicle operation is required. Ability to work nights and weekends. Frequently push, pull, move, or lift up to 50 lbs.
