Job summary

Stantec is seeking Archaeology Technicians to support field programs on a project basis, assisting with data collection and analysis across diverse projects, including solar fields, residential developments, and pipelines. This hourly, on-call position supports Midwest fieldwork with potential extended travel and varied locations.

Ideal candidates hold a relevant degree (Anthropology/Archaeology), have field school or CRM experience, and are capable of working outdoors in all conditions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field is required.
  • Previous experience in a field school or CRM setting as an archaeologist, surveyor, or similar role is required.
  • Familiarity with recording field data using ESRI’s Field Maps is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Work with field crews to conduct archaeological fieldwork.
  • Demonstrate skills with precontact and historic artifact identification, soil analysis, and interpretation.
  • Work under the supervision of a field director or crew lead in Minnesota and neighboring states.
  • Occasional laboratory duties may be available on a project-specific basis.
  • Travel extensively to project sites.
  • Prioritize safety in field and laboratory practices.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment including GPS units, cameras, tablets, and hand tools.
  • Follow safety protocols for hazardous conditions including extreme weather, wildlife, and excavation safety.
  • Participate in daily tailgate safety meetings and follow site-specific safety plans.
  • Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions are identified.

Position Overview

Stantec is a leading global provider of professional consulting services in the fields of environmental sciences, engineering, and archaeology. We are currently seeking experienced Archaeology Technicians to join our dynamic team on a project basis. As an Archaeology Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting our field programs by assisting with data collection and analysis. This position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including solar fields, residential developments, wetland restorations, major urban revitalization projects, pipelines, transmission lines, transportation projects, and excavation and investigations of cemeteries. This hourly, on-call position will support the archaeological fieldwork needs of the Midwest region. This position requires the ability to work outdoors in urban and remote locations and for extended periods under all weather conditions, often traversing rugged terrain. Stantec is committed to workplace safety and maintaining safe work practices. Extensive travel may be required. The standard work week is typically Monday through Friday, with overtime and weekend work required based on project demands and weather conditions. Projects typically run from March through November, with opportunities to travel for fieldwork during the winter months. Multi-week field assignments are common. Location: Stantec has offices across the Midwest. This position would be based at one of our offices in the Midwest. Projects include a mix of local and out of town field projects. Your Key Responsibilities
  • Working with field crews to conduct archaeological fieldwork.
  • Demonstrating skills and experience with field tasks such as precontact and historic artifact identification, as well as soil analysis and interpretation.

  • Conduct Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III data recovery
  • Perform laboratory duties including artifact processing, classification, and curation, as well as artifact photography, database management, mapping, and report layout.
  • Maintain the ability to travel to and from onsite jobs and the Plymouth office locations as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license
Education and Experience
  • A bachelor's or master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field is required.
  • Previous experience in a field school or CRM setting as an archaeologist, surveyor, or similar role is required
  • Technical expertise or specialty within Archaeology/Anthropology is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with recording field data using ESRI’s Field Maps is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Upper Midwest archaeology and field methods is preferred. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. When conducting non-local fieldwork, paid travel time, per diem, and single occupancy hotel rooms are provided. Stantec fleet or rental cars are often provided.

Pay Range
  • Locations in MN, OH, VT, & Various CA, ME, NY, VA Areas-$45,500.00 - $63,700.00 Annually
Pay Transparency:

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

Benefits Summary:

Regular full‑time and part‑time employees (working at least 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short‑term/long‑term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave.
