Job summary

Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) is offering a Fall Seabird Research/Avian Husbandry Intern position in Seward, AK. The intern will support day-to-day seabird and laboratory research, plus avian husbandry tasks under staff guidance.

Applicants should have a strong interest in seabirds and marine ecology; prior lab or field experience is a plus. Duties include surveys, data entry, and care of avian exhibits. Training will be provided, with some outdoor work in variable conditions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field is preferred.
• Experience with seabird identification is preferred but not required.
• Experience with seabird and/or waterfowl handling is preferred but not required.
• Applicants should have strong interest in seabirds and marine ecology.

Responsibilities

• Record weather and observations during vessel-based seabird surveys.
• Assist with weekly shore-based surveys.
• Maintain computer records and data.
• Assist with laboratory work as needed.
• Assist with organizing and inventorying laboratory and field supplies.
• Assist Research Tech II with other projects as needed.
• Perform animal diet preparations and routine cleaning of seabird exhibits and enclosures.
• Record observations and health of collection birds.
