Job summary

Optum is seeking an experienced Medical Coder to support outpatient Ambulatory Observation coding from a remote U.S. location. The role is full-time, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, with preventive guidance from the coding leadership and a focus on accuracy and efficiency.

You will assign CPT/ICD-10 codes, review edits, and stay current with coding guidelines. Telecommuting flexibility may be available, with salary and benefits aligned to experience and performance.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required and AHIMA/AAPC credentials.
• 2+ years of outpatient facility coding experience.
• 2+ years of Same Day Surgery coding experience.
• 2+ years of ICD-10 coding experience.
• Proficiency with Windows and MS Excel; familiarity with EMR systems.

Responsibilities

• Identify CPT and ICD-10 code assignments for outpatient Ambulatory Observation services per guidelines.
• Analyze/resolve CCI Edits and Medical Necessity Edits.
• Understand Medicare Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) codes.
• Abstract additional data elements during chart reviews when coding.
• Maintain coding quality and productivity per QM Manager and Director.

SDS/Observations Medical Coder position is full-time (40 hours/week) Monday to Friday.

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Identify appropriate assignment of CPT and ICD-10 Codes for outpatient Ambulatory Observation services while adhering to the official coding guidelines and established client coding guidelines of the assigned facility
• Apply coding knowledge to analyze/correct CCI Edits and Medical Necessity Edits
• Understand the Medicare Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) codes
• Abstract additional data elements during the chart review process when coding, as needed
• Adhere to the ethical standards of coding as established by AAPC and/or AHIMA
• Adhere to and maintain required levels of performance in both coding quality and productivity as established by Optum360
• Provide documentation feedback to providers, as needed and query physicians when appropriate
• Maintain up-to-date coding knowledge by reviewing materials disseminated/recommended by the QM Manager, Coding Operations Managers and Director of Coding/Quality Management, among others
• Participate in coding department meetings and educational events
• Review and maintain a record of charts coded, held and/or missingAdditional responsibilities as identified by manager

Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma/GED
• Current coding credentials from AHIMA or AAPC (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC or CPC-H)
• 2+ years of outpatient facility coding experience
• 2+ years of experience working with Same Day Surgery Coding
• 2+ years of ICD-10 experience
• Intermediate level of proficiency with Windows environment including MS Excel and EMR systems

Telecommuting Requirements:

• Access to a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provides information privacy
• Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure (if applicable)
• Reside in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service
