Job summary

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Software Development Engineer II to own distributed systems behind the ECS scheduler at scale. You will design scheduling algorithms and drive operational excellence, enabling millions of deployments across regions.

You will mentor engineers, lead end-to-end feature delivery, and collaborate with multiple ECS teams to ensure reliable, fast container orchestration across the AWS global footprint.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
• 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture experience for large-scale systems.
• 1+ years of Software Development Engineer or related experience.
• Experience with multi-tiered, distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using Java, C#, C++, or Perl.
• 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience.
• Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in CS/Engineering/Math or related field.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and operate highly available, scalable distributed systems for container scheduling at massive scale.
• Own end-to-end design and delivery of ECS Scheduler features from design to production.
• Build high-throughput, low-latency scheduling algorithms in Java for real-time placement decisions.
• Design and implement resource management systems to optimize utilization and handle capacity constraints.
• Lead on-call rotations, investigations, deployment safety, and production health for services you own.
• Drive technical design documents and lead reviews for new scheduler capabilities.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews and guidance.
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in AWS-wide systems.
• Collaborate with ECS teams on cross-cutting projects.
• Build operational tooling to improve diagnostics and observability.
