Full-Time student of a specialized internal training program.
A Scrub Assistant Trainee participates in a 6-month formal education program to train as a surgical technologist in the Operating Room (OR) or surgical environment. The program prepares students to assist with operations in the OR, under supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, surgical assistants, or other surgical personnel. The Surgical Tech role involves setting up the operating room, maintaining an aseptic environment, preparing and transporting patients, adjusting lights and equipment, passing instruments and supplies to surgeons and assistants, holding retractors, cutting sutures, and assisting in counting sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
Responsibilities

- Work effectively as a team member
- Complete all course assignments with a minimum of 80% average
- Attend classes regularly as outlined in the student handbook
- Follow school policies outlined in the student handbook
- Prepare equipment and supplies for procedures, ensure room readiness, and stock the OR suite
- Scrub, gown, and glove self and team members for procedures, prepare sterile tables and instruments using proper aseptic technique
- Prepare instruments and supplies on the sterile field promptly and pass instruments accurately during procedures
- Count sponges, needles, and instruments with the RN Circulator according to procedures and label solutions/medications correctly
- Handle instruments and supplies correctly and ensure their proper functioning
- Collect and maintain specimens, ensuring proper identification
- Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and request additional items timely from the RN Circulator
- Use physician preference cards for surgical preparations and update after each case
- Follow universal precautions during surgeries
- Assist with between-case cleanup and prep for the next case, restocking supplies and equipment
- Perform second assistant duties as per hospital policy
- Perform instrument reprocessing and sterilization, including identifying instruments, operating sterilizers, maintaining sterilization records, reporting issues, performing biological tests, and operating the Steris System
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma/GED; college experience and medical terminology preferred
- HH Employee: No warnings or suspensions within the past year
- Experience: None required
- Additional Skills: BLS certification required prior to clinical rotation; excellent communication skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment with flexibility and prioritization skills
