Job summary

Cleveland-Cliffs Tooling & Stamping seeks an Equipment Operator at our Detroit, MI location. The role focuses on processing scrap metals with front end loaders and other heavy equipment, while maintaining safety and efficient operations.

Responsibilities include loading, sorting, operating loaders and balers, performing daily equipment inspections and assisting maintenance. Strong reading, math, and teamwork skills are required; background checks and physicals may be conducted.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High School Diploma/GED or may consider 1+ years of equipment operator experience.
• Ability to work independently
• Must be able to read, write, and perform basic math.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to maintain accurate records
• Ability to follow oral and written communication
• Ability to climb ladders or steps to reach objects
• Ability to endure physical and outdoor work on a daily basis.
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs.

Responsibilities

• Ensure adherence to safety standards including use of PPE and maintaining cleanliness of the site.
• Load and unload materials from storage, production areas, docks, delivery vehicles, staging areas, or containers.
• Sort recycled materials and metals to separate high-grade metals from non-conforming metals.
• Operate & maintain heavy equipment including front end loaders, manlift, yard vehicle, car crusher, shear, and yard switch tractor.
• Operate & maintain baler and manage finished bales in inventory.
• Operate & maintain mobile equipment including forklifts, skid steers, manlifts, street sweeper, and water trucks.
• Perform tasks involving physical labor using tools (hand tools, torch, bander, sawzall, wire snips).
• Identify scrap including grade and type and any undesired elements.
• Position trailers and containers and empty gaylord boxes; switch rail cars and locomotive operation.
• Remove fluids from incoming materials or vehicles; perform cleaning and housekeeping.
