What You Will Do

SCIF & SAPF Operations (SSO-2), within the Special and Sensitive Operations (SSO) Division, is seeking a Security Specialist 2 to provide security support for Special Access Programs (SAPs) and Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs). The role will use knowledge of DOE‑IN, NNSA, and/or LANL safeguards and security policies to assess operations, interpret policies, and recommend improvements for operational and programmatic effectiveness.

This position involves providing internal and external customer service with a high degree of consequence for error. Responsibilities include managing daily SCIF/SAP security operations such as information security, classified material control, access control, personnel security functions, security integration, audits and assessments, and intake/tracking of security inquiries. The specialist will interpret and apply DOE‑IN, NNSA, and/or LANL safeguards in a variety of scenarios, provide resolutions to security problems requiring data analysis, plan and implement schedules, and implement corrective actions in response to identified deficiencies.

The role requires occasional travel and non‑standard work hours. The specialist may be required to be on‑call for a minimum of one week each month (24/7, including holidays) and must respond to the worksite within one hour.

  • Manage daily SCIF/SAP security operations, including information security, classified materials control, access control operations, personnel security functions, security integration, security audits and assessments, and intake/tracking of security inquiries.
  • Interpret and apply DOE‑IN, NNSA, and/or LANL safeguards and security policies to resolve a variety of issues related to SCIF/SAP security operations.
  • Provide resolutions to a diverse range of security problems requiring data analysis and evaluation.
  • Plan and implement schedules to meet objectives.
  • Implement corrective actions at the direction of the SSO or PSO and assess the effectiveness of solutions.
  • Have experience working in SCIF environments during renovation or construction, with a solid understanding of security requirements and access controls.
  • Provide comprehensive customer service to internal customers.
  • Coordinate the acquisition, installation, or replacement of equipment designed to increase efficiency of security operations.
Minimum Job Requirements

Security Experience
Technical experience in one or more of the major security areas: information security, physical security, computer security, personnel security, classified matter management, accountable classified matter management, SCIF operations, security assessments, and internal tracking of security assessment findings.

DOE Experience
Familiar with DOE Orders and LANL requirements related to Safeguards and Security Programs and experience in DOE security audits and inspections.

Communication
Ability to prepare and present security and safeguards reports to internal and external customers at all levels. Excellent communication skills and proven ability to operate in a team environment.

Security Technical Knowledge
Professional/specialized knowledge and experience in one or more of the major security areas: physical security, SAP operations, or other high‑security activities. Experience conducting research, investigating alternatives, and recommending solutions on problems affecting security and safeguards.

Auditing and Assessment
Proven in‑depth knowledge of DOE Orders and LANL requirements related to Safeguards and Security Programs and experience in DOE assessments and internal tracking of assessment findings.

SCIF Construction and Renovation
Demonstrated experience supporting or managing SCIF renovation and construction efforts while ensuring security and regulatory compliance.

Education/Experience
Position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications
  • Alternate Program Security Officer or Alternate Special Security Officer experience.
  • Knowledgeable with Intelligence Community Directives (ICDs), National Industrial Security Program Operations Manual (NISPOM) or relevant DOE Orders for Safeguard and Security.
  • Knowledge of DOE Order 471.5, Special Access Programs.
  • Knowledge of Department of Defense Special Access Program (SAP) Security Manual.
  • Effective interactions and collaborations with DOE, NNSA, DOE‑IN, and institutional security personnel.
  • Active DOE Q and SCI clearances, highly desired.

Los Alamos, NM. The work location is onsite at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating the employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. This requirement applies only to U.S. citizens; foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance – This position will be cleared to Q/SCI. Selected applicants will undergo a background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified material. The position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires U.S. citizenship, except in extremely rare circumstances.

New‑Employment Drug Test – The Laboratory requires a new‑employment drug test. California, New Mexico, and other states have legalized marijuana, but it remains illegal under federal law. A positive test will result in termination of employment, even if usage was pre‑offer.

Regular Position – Term status: Laboratory employees applying for regular‑status positions are converted to regular status.
