Job summary

General Atomics (GA) invites applications for an experienced Scientist to join the DIII-D Diagnostics Group in San Diego, CA, supporting plasma diagnostic research with emphasis on laser-based Thomson scattering.

You will design, analyze, fabricate, install and operate diagnostic systems, collaborating with scientists and engineers while developing data processing software and leading project activities as needed.

Qualifications

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in scientific or related technical field with progressively complex experience.
  • PhD in Plasma Physics is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, manufacture, test, install and operate plasma diagnostic equipment with a focus on laser-based diagnostics, particularly Thomson scattering.
  • Troubleshoot, repair and maintain diagnostic components and systems, with familiarity with data acquisition systems and data storage.
  • Develop, validate and maintain data processing and analysis software.
  • Work with scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop requirements for diagnostic systems and components.
  • Interface with the plasma diagnostic community; document designs, analyses, test results and conclusions, and communicate results via presentations and publications.
  • Devise new approaches in design, analyses and testing of diagnostic components and systems; may perform computational modeling.

Job Summary

General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

The DIII-D National Fusion Facility is the flagship for fusion research in the United States, serving as one of the most flexible and well diagnosed facilities in the world for conducting critical plasma science and technology research that closes gaps on fusion energy. We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Scientist to work within our DIII-D Diagnostics Group in support of the DIII-D programs in San Diego, CA.

This position, under general directions with limited review will apply innovative approaches in conducting design, analysis, fabrication, installation and operation of plasma diagnostic measurement systems with an emphasis on laser-based systems, particularly Thomson scattering.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design, analyze, manufacture, test, install and operate plasma diagnostic equipment with a focus on laser-based diagnostics, particularly Thomson scattering.
  • Troubleshoot, repair and maintain diagnostic components and systems, with a familiarity with data acquisition systems and data storage.
  • Develop, validate and maintain data processing and analysis software.
  • Work with scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop requirements for diagnostic systems and components.
  • Interface with the plasma diagnostic community. Document designs, analyses, test results and conclusions, and communicates results to staff and community via technical presentations and publications.
  • Devises new approaches in the design, analyses and test of new diagnostic components and systems. This requires familiarity with electromagnetic and light transmission theories, and the use of numerical simulation tools. May develop and/or perform computational modeling of scientific phenomena.
  • Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.
  • Performs research and development efforts in development of new plasma diagnostic techniques.
  • Provides direction to engineering and technician staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in scientific or related technical field and progressively complex scientific experience as follows; four or more years experience with a Bachelors degree and two or more years experience with a Masters degree. Equivalent scientific experience may be substituted in lieu of education.
  • PhD in Plasma Physics is highly desirable.
Must have:
  • A complete understanding of scientific concepts, principles, codes, and theory;
  • Experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts
  • An expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in laser, visible light, and infrared generation, transmission and detection.
Must possess the ability to
  • Develop and communicate new concepts;
  • Apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment;
  • Organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and,
  • Determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Experience with Python, C, C++, Matlab, ZEMAX or other similar software analysis packages.
  • Strong working knowledge of Windows and MAC operating systems.
  • Experience in mechanical design using 3D CAD software.
  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to perform complex tasks in one or more scientific areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and, lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects.
  • Able to work extended hours and travel as required.

Job Type: Full-Time Salary

Salary range: 98,100 - 171,398
