Job summary

IMI plc seeks a scientist with mass spectrometry expertise to lead development for new products and applications related to electron multipliers and filaments. The role is onsite in Palmer, MA, USA, and involves testing, mentoring, and documenting results to support product advancement.

You will contribute to innovative scientific solutions, stay abreast of emerging technologies, and collaborate with sales and manufacturing to apply high-level knowledge across projects.

Qualifications

• PhD or extensive experience in analytical instrumentation development.
• 3–5 years hands-on instrumentation R&D in industry or academia.

Role Overview:

A scientist with expertise in mass spectrometry who can lead development efforts for new products and applications related to electron multipliers and filaments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support product development by testing and analysis of new concepts, designs, or applications.
• Generating novel ideas, approaches, and solutions to scientific challenges to support product development.
• Staying updated on emerging technologies and scientific advancements by attending conferences, customer intimacy, and self-guided research.
• Support sales and manufacturing when high level technical knowledge is needed.
• Identifying and mitigating scientific and operational risks to support production.
• Mentor others in the organization by providing training and support.
• Documenting experimental results and maintaining a knowledge database that can be used to support future efforts.
• Draft technical proposals and report on project milestones to site and group management as needed.
• Maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.

Critical Competencies for Success

• PhD in analytical chemistry, physics, or related fields. Alternatively, extensive experience in the development of analytical/scientific instrumentation.
• Minimum experience 3-5 years of hands‑on experience with instrumentation research and development in either commercial or academic settings.
• Subject matter knowledge of relevant technologies.
• Advanced analytical and problem‑solving skills: Expertise in troubleshooting, hypothesis testing, and applying statistical analysis.
• Expertise in experimental design and methodology: Ability to design robust experiments, validate methods, and interpret complex data.
• Excellent communication skills.
