Job description

Scientist – Integrative Proteomics (Mass Spectrometry Platform - BIohub SF)

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.

Our Vision

- We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments

  • We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
  • The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond

Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.

    The Opportunity

The Mass Spectrometry Platform at the CZ Biohub-SF is a collaborative and fast-moving research group that develops and applies cutting-edge technologies at the intersection of proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and computational biology. We are especially focused on mapping molecular features of cell states across scales—from subcellular structures to single cells and whole tissues—through deep integration with imaging, sequencing, and data science platforms across the CZ Biohub Network.

We are seeking a technically skilled and creative Scientist to join our Integrative Proteomics efforts. This role will center on instrument optimization and method development for increasingly sensitive and high-resolution measurements—from limited input samples to spatially complex tissues—while building the automation infrastructure needed to scale these efforts across diverse projects. The successful candidate will help drive the generation of large, multimodal molecular datasets with the depth and richness to power tomorrow’s AI-driven models of biology. The scope and pace of our work—bridging emerging technologies and interdisciplinary science—are rarely possible in traditional academic or industry settings, making this a unique opportunity for someone eager to operate at the frontier of discovery biology. It is expected that the applicant will present the outcome of their work at national / international meetings, and substantially contribute to manuscript authorship. The majority of work will be performed at the Stanford campus in Palo Alto, however this position also requires infrequent visits to the Mission Bay campus in San Francisco.

This role will be based in Palo Alto, CA initially, with a planned transition to Redwood City in two years.

    You will

    - Oversee and reinforce standards of high quality and high-throughput data collection
  • Guide LCMS infrastructure maintenance and optimization
  • Integrate knowledge of mass spectrometry-based proteomics methodologies with dynamic cellular systems
  • Coordinate research activities with collaborating laboratories within the CZ Biohub-SF and allied research institutions
  • Author publications and present work in internal and public forums (e.g., conferences)
  • Success will be measured by the manuscripts and public data sets that you contribute to

    You have

    Essential –

    - Minimum education: PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Immunology, Systems Biology, or related field OR an equivalent amount of hands-on experience focused in the above areas.
  • Minimum years of experience: >3 years in the field, inclusive of graduate research
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with Thermo orbitrap and/or Bruker timsTOF mass spectrometers
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience operating nano-flow HPLCs coupled to the above mass spectrometer(s)
  • Able to build and troubleshoot complex LCMS data acquisition pipelines, from specimen generation through mass spectrometer operation
  • Demonstrated prior use of DIA workflows, from LCMS method development through search result generation and interpretation
  • Facility with mass spectrometry data sets consisting of 10’s to 100’s of LCMS analyses: able to distill these datasets into biological knowledge
  • Interpersonal skills: able to communicate effectively with diverse research teams composed of experimentalists, biologists and computationalists

    Nice to have -

    - Strong writing skills as evidenced by publication record
  • Strong presentation skills as evidenced by seminars at public regional / national / international meetings
  • Track record of designing and implementing low-input (single-cell) workflows.
  • Comfortable with cell culture
  • Experience with metabolomics, lipidomics and/or glycomics methods
  • Experience with MALDI-based imaging techniques
  • Programming fluency (Python, R, java)
  • Database interaction (SQL)
  • Prior management experience

    Compensation

The Palo Alto, CA base pay range for this role is Scientist I = $108,000.00 - $148,500.00 and Scientist II = $121,600.00 - $167,200.00. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process.

    What We Provide

    - Resources to disrupt and innovate at the frontiers of our knowledge of biology and disease
  • A collegial and collaborative environment consisting of diverse expertise
  • Access to collaborators, resources and facilities at our three partner universities (Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco) and at partner organizations in the SF Bay Area and beyond
  • Competitive compensation and benefits commensurate with the experience

If you’re interested in a role but your previous experience doesn’t perfectly align with each qualification in the job description, we still encourage you to apply as you may be the perfect fit for this or another role.

    Benefits

We offer a robust benefits program that enables the important work Biohubbers do everyday. Our benefits include healthcare coverage, life and disability insurance, commuter subsidies, family planning services with fertility care, childcare stipend, 401(k) match, flexible time off and a generous parental leave policy. In addition, we honor our commitment to career development and our value of scholarly excellence through regular onsite opportunities to learn from the world's leading scientists.

The CZ Biohub Network is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity of thought, ideas and perspectives. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all Biohubbers feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution. Therefore, we provide employment opportunities without regard to age, race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, disability, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or any other protected status in accordance with applicable law.
