Job summary

Voya Energy, Inc. is seeking a scientist to design and synthesize molecular electrocatalysts for advanced metal-air fuel cells. You will map structure-property relationships and translate findings into improved catalyst designs, collaborating with external vendors to source ligands and scale chemistry from lab to pilot.

Experience with electrochemical systems is preferred; you thrive in a fast-paced startup, delivering results with urgency and rigor.

Qualifications

• Design and synthesis of molecular functional materials (e.g., coordination complexes, organic redox-active compounds, molecular catalysts).
• Experience with electrochemical systems such as fuel cells or flow batteries is preferred but not required.
• Ability to operate in a fast-paced startup environment with urgency and results-orientation.

Responsibilities

• Develop improved molecular electrocatalysts for metal-air fuel cells to improve power and energy density.
• Identify structure-property relationships and mechanisms to guide new designs and improvements.
• Collaborate with external vendors to source ligands and complexes for screening and scale-up; scope custom syntheses and assess feasibility and cost.
• Scale and demonstrate technology from lab to pilot and production-intent systems with the product development team.

Job description

Role Responsibilities:

• Develop improved molecular electrocatalysts to improve the power, efficiency, and energy density of Voya’s metal-air fuel cells.

• Identify structure-property relationships, determine mechanism of action and failure, and translate into improved catalyst designs.

• Work with external vendors to source novel ligands and complexes for both screening and scale-up. Scope custom syntheses, evaluate feasibility and cost.

• Work with Voya’s product development team to scale and demonstrate your technology from lab to pilot and production-intent systems.

Qualifications:

• Track record of design and synthesis of molecular functional materials. E.g. coordination complexes, organic redox-active compounds, molecular catalysts, dyes/chromophores, soluble sensors, or flow-battery active materials.

• Experience with electrochemical systems (e.g. fuel cells, flow batteries, electrolyzers) preferred but not required.

• Ability to operate in a fast-paced, start-up environment

• Results-oriented with a strong sense urgency
