The Refinish Scientist provides direct support to the Refinish Team in the development of Refinish coating products.

JOB RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Development and optimization of coating formulations in the Refinish Portfolio, spanning Undercoat, Topcoat, & Clearcoat chemistries.
  • Work as part of a global team to support global/regional product launches and product optimizations.
  • Understanding of customer specifications and ability to perform all testing needed to gain customer approvals using appropriate design of experiments and statistical tools.
  • Interpret testing data to generate lab reports that will be presented both internally and externally to customers.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing for defect batches, improvement of right first-time initiatives, assist in manufacturing scale ups and alignments, and localize formulas to new manufacturing sites.
  • Support lab work requests from the Product Group including root cause analysis of defects using experimental designs and analytical testing.
  • Ability to lead and/or be a significant contributor in cross-functional global teams to support product development, product approval testing, scale-up and manufacturing and customer technical service.
  • Understanding of accelerated and long-term weathering exposure testing, including effects of Xenon and Florida Exposure.
  • General understanding of analytical testing capabilities and ability to use data provided from analytical evaluations to support conclusions.
  • Organized documentation of experimental test results using Microsoft Office Products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to lead meetings and effectively communicate concise project updates to a cross-functional teams with audiences varying from Technical Colleagues to Product Managers to Customers.
  • Actively participate in 5S initiatives to help improve the lab productivity and overall safety of the laboratory.
  • Ability to work well with supervisor and a variety of R&D, manufacturing, and marketing people in a team environment.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S./M.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or closely related discipline is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have practical experience in the chemical industry, preferably with a strong working knowledge of the Refinish industry and hand spray application techniques.
  • Preferred candidate will have a good understanding of color theory, along with a working knowledge of Analytical testing and Accelerated Weathering Testing capabilities.
  • Candidate must have outstanding interpersonal, oral communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Candidate must be able to work well in both self-managed and team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and documentation of experimental testing is a requirement to effectively manage multiple projects with varying deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
