Job summary

New York City College of Technology, part of The City University of New York (CUNY), is seeking a part-time Science Tutor (College Assistant) for the SEEK program. You will tutor General Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiology on campus, individually or in small groups, and assist in workshops and data maintenance.

Reporting to the SEEK Academic Program Manager, you will support students, participate in meetings, and help connect them with Academic Coaching or Counseling services.

Qualifications

  • Must demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher in related coursework, and a “B” or better in science courses is preferred.
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Biology, Physics, Chemistry or related field degree is preferred.
  • Prior tutoring or teaching college students is not required but highly preferred.
  • Availability to work 3 days per week in person (part-time).
  • Ability to tutor Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiology courses; Physics and Chemistry a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Knowledge of contemporary academic technology resources for use with college students.
  • A basic understanding of educational opportunity programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to support the academic success of a diverse student body.

GENERAL DUTIES


  • Under supervision, performs miscellaneous clerical, administrative, research or other work related to the operation of a College or other unit where such work is required on a part-time basis or for a period of limited duration.

  • There is one Assignment Level for this position. All personnel perform related work. This specification describes typical assignments; related duties may be assigned as needed.



  • Maximum tenure for any employee in this hourly position is 1040 hours per year.

  • Performs routine clerical work; may answer and attend to telephone calls; maintain records, operate office machines (such as copier), sort and distribute mail, issue keys and identity cards, act as messenger, and perform related tasks as required.



  • Types letters, memoranda, charts, and similar materials.

  • Acts as cashier.

  • Assists in statistical or research activities. May collect and compile data, code data for computer entry, perform data entry, and run computer reports.

  • Performs clerical library work, such as sorting and shelving books, performing data entry into library systems, or binding books and periodicals.

  • Assists in instructional programs, including tutoring and assisting students in areas such as reading and mathematics. May assist in speech and hearing therapy, provide musical accompaniment, and/or distribute and collect physical education equipment.

  • Enters and maintains departmental records such as inventory control records, rosters, directories, and schedules.

  • May operate computers, computer software, and other electronic equipment in performing assigned tasks.

New York City College of Technology (City Tech) of the City University of New York (CUNY) is a comprehensive college offering associate and bachelor's degree programs in downtown Brooklyn. The Percy Ellis Sutton Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) program at City Tech invites applications for a part-time position of Science Tutor (College Assistant).


Reporting to the SEEK Academic Program Manager, the Science Tutor (College Assistant) will:



  • Tutor science disciplines including General Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiology. Physics and Chemistry a plus.

  • Provide in-person individual or small group science tutoring on campus

  • Facilitate basic workshops to build skills/increase comprehension as needed

All positions are subject to budget availability.

Compensation

$19.12 per hour
