UPPER ARLINGTON CITY SCHOOLS

Location: High School

Position: Science Teacher

Licensure: 7-12 Integrated Science (Preferred); 7-12 Life Science; 7-12 Physical Science

Reports to: Principal

Employment Status: Regular/Full-time

FLSA Status: Exempt

Description: Instruct students in the specific area of specialty; serve as a role model; help students learn subject matter and skills that will broaden their learning experiences and contribute to their development as mature, capable and responsible adults; create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning; guide the process toward the achievement of curricular goals

NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education with appropriate subject area from four-year college or university
  • Appropriate State of Ohio licensure
  • Prior teaching experience
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

  • Knowledge of academic area and teaching methodology
  • Basic knowledge of all other subject matter
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure safety of students
  • Teach and evaluate the students using sound instructional practices
  • Effectively manage the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain a good learning environment
  • Prepare clear and timely lesson plans
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required
  • Provide guidance to students to promote their educational development
  • Attend parent/teacher conferences
  • Distribute course-related assignments
  • Ensure students are learning all subject material by appropriately assessing on a regular basis
  • Provide complete lesson plans for substitute
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with parents through effective use of interim reports, report cards, conferences, and personal telephone calls
  • Assist the administration in implementing all procedures and rules governing student life
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter and present clear, complete and accurate explanations utilizing a variety of instructional techniques and media suitable to the level of learners
  • Act as teacher, facilitator and information source in subject area specialty
  • Teach new concepts and facilitate different activities enabling students to learn in different ways
  • Act as a mentor for teachers new to the district
  • Organize various subject-specific programs within assigned building
  • Act as department chairperson when requested and agreed upon
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
  • Attend meetings and in-services as required
  • Refer attendance, health, and psychological/emotional problems to Principal and/or Guidance Counselor
  • Interact with public in official capacity when required
  • Interact with Superintendent and/or Board of Education and present information as requested
  • Teach students using sound instructional practices
  • Collaborate with colleagues
  • Attend educational field trips
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students
  • Refer students suspected of learning difficulties to the intervention assistance team
  • Follow the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined by the State Department of Education Content Standard, proficiency outcomes and courses of study as approved by the Board of Education
  • Notify parents if student is not meeting classroom goals
  • Implement instructional strategies that incorporate content standards for subject matter area of expertise

  • Respond to routine questions and requests in a timely, appropriate manner
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships
  • Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other educational materials
  • Participate in committees, study teams, and co-curricular activities
  • Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional seminars, workshops, etc. to keep current on relevant issues
  • Counsel, advise, encourage, and motivate students

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue
  • Occasional interaction among unruly children
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 25 pounds, e.g., paper boxes, deliveries of supplies and equipment
  • Frequently move and position self as necessary to access and operate equipment
  • Frequently move around workspace and travel throughout school building and/or school district
