Job summary

Vets Hired seeks a dedicated Science Teacher to deliver standards-based instruction across general science, biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. You will create engaging, student-centered lessons with hands-on labs, foster inquiry, and guide student projects while maintaining lab safety and supporting diverse learners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a science field or equivalent.
  • Eligible for Virginia Teaching Certificate or currently certificated.
  • TB screening confirming absence of contagious tuberculosis.
  • Strong knowledge of science content, lab instruction, and effective teaching methods.
  • Familiarity with current scientific research techniques, lab equipment, and instructional tech.
  • Ability to safely manage laboratory environments and materials.
  • Excellent communication, classroom management, organizational, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to deliver engaging classroom presentations and written reports.

Responsibilities

  • Teach science courses in accordance with curriculum standards and Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Develop and implement student-centered lesson plans using inquiry-based learning and lab investigations.
  • Conduct science demonstrations, experiments, and hands-on lab activities.
  • Provide individual, cooperative, and small-group instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Teach safe handling and use of lab chemicals, equipment, and materials.
  • Maintain laboratory safety standards and report equipment maintenance needs.
  • Assess student learning through various instructional and lab assessments.
  • Maintain inventory of science equipment, chemicals, and supplies.
  • Identify student learning needs and collaborate with staff to support academic success.
  • Assist students with scientific research projects and science-related activities.
  • Communicate progress with parents, counselors, and administration.
  • Participate in curriculum development, faculty meetings, PD, and committees.
  • Supervise students during classroom, lab, field trips, and other activities.
  • Support school and community science programs and displays.

Job Summary

The Science Teacher provides standards-based science instruction that develops students' scientific knowledge, critical thinking, inquiry skills, and laboratory experience. The role teaches subjects such as general science, biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, environmental science, and oceanography while creating engaging, student-centered learning experiences through experiments, research, and hands‑on laboratory activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Teach science courses in accordance with curriculum standards and Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Develop and implement student-centered lesson plans using inquiry-based learning and laboratory investigations.
  • Conduct science demonstrations, experiments, and hands‑on laboratory activities.

  • Teach safe handling, storage, and proper use of laboratory chemicals, equipment, and materials.
  • Maintain laboratory safety standards and report equipment maintenance needs.
  • Assess student learning through various instructional and laboratory assessments.
  • Maintain inventory of science equipment, chemicals, instructional materials, and supplies.
  • Identify student learning needs and collaborate with staff to support academic success.
  • Assist students with scientific research projects and science-related activities.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, counselors, and school administration regarding student progress.
  • Participate in curriculum development, faculty meetings, professional development, and school committees.
  • Supervise students during classroom, laboratory, field trips, and other school activities.
  • Support school and community science programs, displays, and extracurricular science activities.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree with a major or minor in a science field.
  • Eligible for or currently holding a Virginia Teaching Certificate.
  • Tuberculin (TB) screening confirming absence of contagious tuberculosis.
  • Strong knowledge of science content, laboratory instruction, and effective teaching methodologies.
  • Knowledge of current scientific research techniques, laboratory equipment, and instructional technology.
  • Ability to safely manage laboratory environments and science materials.
  • Excellent communication, classroom management, organizational, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to deliver engaging classroom presentations and written reports.
