Job description

Job Summary

Under limited supervision of the Science Laboratory Manager, assist with the preparation, set up, break down, and clean‑up of the biological science laboratories according to the type of lab activities and experiments performed.

Essential Functions

• Prepares labs according to assigned functional discipline (e.g., anatomy, biology, zoology, botany, microbiology). Includes presentation of all materials needed.
• Assists with preparation of chemical solutions and media: calculate concentrations, measuring, weighing, heating, cooling, dispensing, and use of balances and autoclaves.
• Returns labs to original condition: clean surfaces, sanitize supplies, make minor repairs.
• Assists lab manager with maintaining samples of living organisms (microorganisms, protozoa, fruitflies, marine organisms, plants, terrestrial arthropods) using aseptic technique.
• Assists lab manager with inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
• Disposes of waste materials per safety protocols.
• Assists faculty with lab activities.
• Maintains laboratory equipment: clean, test, calibrate before classes.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree or equivalent education and experience.
• Minimum of three years of functional experience in a science laboratory setting, including hazardous material training.
• Strong knowledge in biology, microbiology, zoology, botany and related areas.
• Ability to manage own work to job and performance standards and act as an active team member.
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and specialized computer systems.
• Effective communication skills with employees and students.
• Ability to lead a group of employees.
