Job summary

Florida Gulf Coast University seeks a Lab Technician II to operate and maintain teaching laboratories and equipment in the Biological Sciences department. You will support safe, uninterrupted learning environments and assist in the development of lab SOPs.

Responsibilities include setting up equipment, preparing reagents, maintaining supplies, and training student lab assistants to ensure high-quality lab experiences for students.

Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma and four years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting and with Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, Outlook).
  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or related field preferred.

Lab Technician II
Job Summary

The Laboratory Technician II provides operation and maintenance ofteaching laboratory facilities and equipment in the Department ofBiological Sciences. Performs all procedures necessary to maintaina safe, uninterrupted work environment in accordance withdepartmental, university, and national safety guidelines. Supportsstudent success by contributing to the creation of a high-qualitylearning environment and continuous improvement andinnovation.

Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Prepares and maintains laboratories facilities for teachinginstruction.
  • Prepares solvents, solutions, reagents, and apparatusesaccording to faculty guidelines.
  • Maintains clean laboratories facilities.
  • Responsible for set up and breakdown of equipment.
  • Participates in environmental health and safety audits,maintains accurate records, and ensures compliance with safetyregulations of science laboratories.
  • Provides training on proper usage of laboratory equipment andsafe laboratory practices including safe handling and disposal ofbiohazardous materials, and standard policies and protocols forreporting unusual events.
  • Performs routine maintenance and inspections to ensure optimumcalibration and condition of equipment.
  • Maintains supplies for laboratory courses and replenish stocksof solvents, reagents, and solutions. Ensures chemicals are storedin the correct manner according to safety codes, regulations, andbest practices.
  • Maintains accurate records on equipment maintenance andacquisition of supplies.
  • Trains and supervises student lab assistants on the proper useof laboratory equipment, chemicals, and all applicable safetyprotocols.
  • Assists in the development of laboratory standard operatingprocedures.

Required Qualifications:
  • This position requires a high school diploma and four years offull-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Relevant experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient withMicrosoft Office (Work, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience,and/or certifications may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in BiologicalSciences, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Marine Science,Chemistry, or other appropriate Natural or Physical Science.
  • Laboratory experience in an academic setting.
  • Experience with microbiology, genetics, cellular biology,and/or molecular biology preparations.
  • Laboratory experience in an academic setting.
  • Experience working with students.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Proven ability to think strategically and approach challengeswith creativity
  • Demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, andholding oneself accountable
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectivelyacross teams
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilitiesand/or equipment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory and experimental protocols andprocedures.
  • Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety standards, guidelines, andprotocols.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communicationskills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and an ability to prioritizeand complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Ability to prepare stock chemicals according to givenstandards.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Ability to maintain records and perform basic mathematicalcalculations.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team andindependently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff,faculty, students, and the community in a service-orientedenvironment.
  • Ability to collaborate with classroom instructors to ensuredelivery of a quality laboratory experience to students in alaboratory/classroom setting.
  • Ability to prepare and set-up appropriate laboratory materialsand equipment for various laboratory activities.
  • Ability to utilize, calibrate, configure and/or troubleshootlaboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Able to work an irregular schedule as needed, includingevenings and weekends, to accommodate class scheduling.
