Originallyfounded in 1991as Harlem RBI, DREAM has grown to annually serve more than 2,500 youth across East Harlem and the South Bronx through a network of seven PreK-12, extended-day, extended-year DREAM Charter Schools and community sports-based youth development programs. AP Capstone Courses: AP Research and AP Seminar

The faculty and staff at DREAM Charter High School are united in our belief that a more just world is possible. We are firm in our conviction that our students’ capacity to read, write, and speak in a compelling manner is an essential tool necessary to create change in the world. Our mission is for our graduates to be able to apply those skills in service of realizing their dreams and making the world a better place for others.

AP Capstone is a diploma program from College Board based on two yearslong AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Rather than teaching subject-specific content, these courses develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting (collegeboard.org). As part of our AP for All philosophy, all DREAM Charter High schools students are enrolled in this course. As a culmination of their time at DCHS, each student will complete a research paper and will deliver a presentation and orally defend their research design, approach, and findings.

Responsibilities

• Teaching and Planning
• Adapt and implement an AP-aligned curriculum in both AP Seminar and AP Research Courses for 11th and 12th graders through backwards planning;
• Collaborate with co-teachers and colleagues across both content areas and grade levels;
• Create assessments that will successfully measure academic progress;
• Assume responsibility for academic progress within the classroom;
• Abide by school-wide protocols for documenting all syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, rubrics, etc.;
• Continually progress monitor and analyze student data to best inform instruction;
• Lead remediation and extension blocks, as well as advisory, and homeroom classes;
• Revise curriculum and teaching methods based on measurable data;
• Set and maintain high expectations for students;
• Work with the Student Support team to create individual behavior plans for select students as needed;
• Implement school-wide practices for classroom management and individual behavior plans;
• Take ownership of classroom management with the mentality of “How can I improve my implementation of our systems, while always assuming the best in my scholars?”

• Work with High School team to analyze data, revise practices, norm on team-wide initiatives, and discuss individual scholars with a solutions-oriented mindset;
• Create systems students for exceptional effort and growth, both academically and behaviorally;
• Regularly communicate scholars’ progress towards goals with families;
• Attend and be an active participant in all professional development (school-wide or team-based) opportunities;
• Participate in regular one-on-one feedback meetings with Academic Dean to discuss observation feedback, role-play pedagogical strategies, analyze data and/or refine curriculum map.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred;
• Appropriate New York State certification preferred;
• At least 5 years of teaching experience, strongly preferred;
• At least 1 year of AP teaching experience, strongly preferred;
• A desire to make a difference in the lives of our students, families, and community;
• Desire and ability to receive and implement feedback;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences (including colleagues, students, families);
• A commitment to working with diverse populations of families and students;
• Bilingual (Spanish) preferred;
• Strong belief in an AP for All model;
• A strong belief in the mission and values of DREAM, including the desire to make a difference in the lives of our students, families, and community.

Compensation

• The salary range for incoming teachers is $75,000 to $100,000. New teacher salaries are determined based on the number of years of experience as a teacher.
• Additional compensation is added for incoming teachers with Master's degrees and NYS Special Education certifications.
• Teachers are eligible for annual salary increases based on tenure and performance; salaries for teachers who continue on at DREAM can exceed the incoming teacher band above.
• DREAM is committed to upholding highly competitive salaries and ensuring teacher pay is within the highest quartile of NYC Charter Schools.
