Job summary

Portland Public Schools is seeking a Van Driver (School Year, Full Time) to transport students on designated routes and special trips. The role guarantees 40 hours weekly during the school year, with summers off, and offers a benefits-eligible, union-supported position.

The driver will adhere to all laws, conduct codes, and safety protocols, performing daily vehicle checks and reporting issues while maintaining a welcoming, safe environment for students on routes in Portland, Maine.

Qualifications

• Must medically qualify through pre-employment and annual USDOT physical examinations.
• Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and laws.
• Ability to interact positively with student passengers and maintain discipline for safe driving.
• Ability to follow routes, read maps, and adapt to schedule changes.
• Driving record must be clean for prior three years, with limited violations.
• Must pass a supervised road test.
• Provide two personal references.

Responsibilities

• Drive established routes or individualized trips, picking up and dropping off students while obeying laws and safe driving practices.
• Enforce the Student Bus Conduct Code.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections daily and report defects.
• Monitor vehicle operations and report abnormal conditions.
• Maintain a rider count to ensure not overloaded (max 11 passengers).
• Wash and fuel the van daily.
• Deliver mail and packages as required for school staff.
• Advise Transportation Director on route changes to save time or cost.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
