Job summary

Westerly Public Schools is seeking Van Drivers who are committed to safely transporting students to and from school while providing a supportive, caring, and safe environment. Successful candidates will manage student behavior and must follow all safety regulations.

Your responsibilities include pre- and post-trip inspections, reporting any issues, and maintaining a clean vehicle. Previous van driving experience is preferred, along with excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

Qualifications

• Previous van driving experience is preferred.
• Extensive knowledge of motor vehicle laws.
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

• Follows planned routes making scheduled stops to transport children to and from school.
• Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school vans.
• Communicates with the dispatcher via two-way radio during the route.
• Manages student behavior when occupants are in the van.
• Provides a written record of violations of student conduct to the Transportation Safety Coordinator.
• Keeps the assigned van clean.
• Stays on the assigned schedule.
• Performs a pre- and post-trip DOT inspection.
• Discharges students only at authorized stops.
• Exercises responsible leadership on out-of-district trips.
• Transports only authorized students and School Department staff.
• Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Van Drivers play an integral part of our community and educational process. They are committed to safely transport students to and from school, beginning and ending each school day by providing a supportive, caring, and safe environment.

Responsibilities

• Follows planned routes making scheduled stops to transport children to and from school while obeying all rules and regulations.
• Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school vans.
• Communicates with the dispatcher via two‑way radio during the route; provides updates and reports delays, mechanical failures, emergencies, changes in traffic patterns, or accidents.
• Manages student behavior when occupants are in the van.
• Provides a written record of violations of student conduct to the Transportation Safety Coordinator.
• Keeps the assigned van clean.
• Stays on the assigned schedule.
• Performs a pre‑ and post‑trip DOT inspection for mechanical defects with the assigned vehicle.
• Discharges students only at authorized stops.
• Exercises responsible leadership when on out‑of‑district school trips.
• Transports only authorized students and School Department staff.
• Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.
