Job Title: Children’s School Therapist

Schedule: This is a school-year position that follows the academic calendar of the assigned school(s). The position is scheduled to work during the school year and does not regularly work during the summer break or other extended school closures. 20-25 hours/week

Job Summary:

The Children’s School Therapist is responsible for direct provision of school-based clinical services. Assess child and family psychotherapeutic needs through thorough psychosocial and substance use assessments. Provide individual and family sessions. Assist families in supporting the social, emotional, developmental, and recovery-oriented needs of children and adolescents. Responsible for completing documentation in a timely manner related to assessments, treatment planning, treatment services, and discharge planning activities. This position is primarily located at 1-3 school systems with some office hours possible.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Embrace, support and implement Community Healing Center’s vision and values related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  • Perform clinical assessments and evaluations of children and families referred for services.
  • Work in the school setting for the contracted hours each week.
  • Coordinate with school staff to develop a caseload and daily schedule.
  • Communicate with school staff on student participation and progress.
  • Communicate with parents as necessary.
  • Provide individual and small group sessions with students.
  • Provide social emotional lessons and activities with students as needed.
  • Complete training in BH works system.
  • Maintain necessary documentation in BH Works system: including referrals, consents, assessments, treatment plans, periodic reviews, progress notes, and discharge paperwork.
  • Link, coordinate and monitor children and family needs with appropriate agency and community program involvement, as requested by the family in the Individual Plan of Service.
  • Prepare case histories as needed for use in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Develop intervention and treatment plans which include an evaluation of family support, client strengths and level of risks.
  • Provide individual and family therapy, as needed in settings most conducive to successful treatment.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams, as required to assess, plan and review the needs of clients and families; may include juvenile treatment and recovery courts.
  • Maintain required case documentation and record delivered services in an accurate and timely manner as required by regulating entities, accreditation organizations and management.
  • Participate in ongoing staff training and development programs.
  • Consult with psychiatrist for medical input into treatment issues.
  • Participate in clinical reviews and audits.
  • Participate in supervision as required by licensing board but at a minimum of two times per month.
  • Provide coverage and handling of emergency situations, as need be.
  • Participate in all facility and program quality improvement activities, as appropriate.
  • Provide in-services as requested, to staff members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, filling in for other programs on an as-needed basis.
  • Obtain and monitor funding authorizations from the state and insurance companies; apply for and maintain credentials, as necessary.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with referral sources.
  • Complies with agency continuity and emergency preparedness plans, including the ability to work remotely when onsite work is not feasible.
Required Qualifications/Competencies
  • Master’s Degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or related human services area.
  • Required licenses: Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW), Limited License Master’s of Social Work (LLMSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC) or Licensed Psychologist (LP).
  • Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) substance abuse certification (CAADC). If you do not have a MCBAP approved certification, it must be obtained within 2 years of employment.
  • Direct contact with under-age clients with mental health disorders, abused children and non-offending family members.
  • All staff are required to be screened for tuberculosis and understand that exposure to tuberculosis is possible.
  • Flu and Covid-19 Vaccines, required. Covid-19 Booster, preferred.
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver license, required.
Experience, Skills, and Abilities
  • One year of experience in the examination, evaluation and treatment of minors and their families.
  • Good interpersonal skills including the ability to engage client in therapeutic process and ability to work as a member of a clinical team.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with school personnel.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility to meet needs of the school schedule or unplanned changes to student’s schedule.
  • Ability to walk longer distances and climb stairs in school settings.
  • Ability to work in different offices or classrooms when necessary.
  • Ability to organize and prepare materials in the office prior to arriving at school.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and professionally.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, ability to operate computer equipment.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, program and services as they relate to the provision of services.
  • Working knowledge of the system of services needed to address the needs of children and families and the ability to coordinate care between these programs.
