Job Description

Title: School Social Worker

School Year: 2026–2027

Salary and terms of employment: As per the current Midland City Education Association (MCEA) Agreement (salary protection available).

The School Social Worker helps to support the emotional, social and academic well‑being of students. They provide individual and group counseling to students dealing with a variety of personal issues and help them develop coping skills to manage these challenges. They work with teachers, parents and administrators to develop individualized plans that help students succeed in school. The school social worker is integral to creating a safe and supportive school environment, helping students succeed academically while developing the emotional and social skills needed to thrive in life.

Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Master's Degree in Social Work
    • Limited or full licensure as a Master Social Worker in Michigan
    • State approved certification as a school social worker
  • Ability to withstand the physical and mental rigors of the position
  • Demonstrated technical skills:
    • Computer knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, and other basic computer skills
    • Familiarity with student information systems
    • Computer competency and familiarity with emerging technologies
  • Well‑developed problem‑solving skills
  • Sound, independent judgment, including handling of confidential matters
  • Effective communication with parents, staff members, and students, verbally and in writing
  • Pass background check
Essential Functions
  • Knowledge of data‑driven decision making in relation to student behaviors and socio‑emotional challenges
  • Complete psycho‑social evaluations in educational settings in compliance with IDEA regulations and research‑based practices
  • Work in cooperation with Student Support Teams to identify and develop effective intervention strategies
  • Conduct a Functional Behavior Assessment and create Behavior Intervention Plans
  • Use data to develop Present Levels of Student Academic and Functional Performance that guide goal development and intervention
  • Utilize research‑based clinical interventions
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community agencies to access appropriate services on behalf of children
  • Understand Michigan Special Education laws and IDEA regarding socio‑emotional needs, e.g., Positive Behavior Support, Seclusion and Restraint
  • Adhere to all guidelines established in the National Social Worker Code of Ethics
  • Organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
  • Maintain an organized environment
  • Work independently as well as with a team
  • Maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality regarding all district matters and records
  • Be available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day, as needed
  • Assess student progress toward objectives, expectations, and goals for feedback to students, parents, and administration
  • Participate in meetings and professional development activities for optimal performance
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records per law, district policy, and regulations
  • Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, substance abuse, harassment, zero‑tolerance offenses) to maintain personal safety, provide a positive learning environment, and comply with state law and board policies
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and/or direct to appropriate personnel
  • Respond promptly to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators, students, or central office staff for resolution, information or direction
  • Maintain predictable, reliable attendance
  • Fine motor skills and ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted for student behavior management and equipment handling
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time and perform required movements (stoop, squat, bend, crouch, kneel, climb stairs)
  • Able to ride in a vehicle as necessary
  • Able to work indoors and outdoors in all seasons/weather as permitted
  • May require travel to offsite locations
Additional Functions
  • Communicate effectively via district‑assigned email on a daily basis as determined by supervisor
  • Consistent and reliable performance of job responsibilities
  • Perform additional responsibilities related to at‑risk populations as deemed appropriate by the superintendent
  • Perform other job responsibilities deemed appropriate by the building administrator and/or superintendent
