School Social Worker Job Description

The School Social Worker provides direct and indirect counseling services to students and their families or legal guardians. They support students' social-emotional and educational development as outlined in their IEP, collaborating with families, outside agencies, and school staff. The role is vital to the school team.

Essential Functions
  1. Complete social developmental studies and behavioral assessments related to special education evaluations.
  2. Review student referral packets for relevant social and mental health information.
  3. Maintain ongoing communication with school district personnel about student progress.
  4. Stay current on available outside agencies, hospitals, and social service facilities.
  5. Gather information from staff before IEP meetings.
  6. Prepare IEP and other reports for special education meetings.
  7. Provide feedback on student progress and future goals during meetings.
  8. Communicate supportively with parents, providing information related to special education.
  9. Participate in in-service training sessions and suggest future topics.
  10. Encourage student organizations that support personal and institutional goals.
  11. Be knowledgeable about issues affecting students' actions and learning abilities.
  12. Adjust treatment and instructional strategies accordingly.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in a mental health or human services field from an accredited college (counseling, social work, psychology). Current state licensure (PEL) such as ISBE Type 73, LCSW, LSW, LPC, or LCPC. 1-2 years of experience in behavioral health, including individual, family, and group therapy, crisis intervention, with a focus on children and adolescents preferred.

Skills and Knowledge
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Google G-Suite, Microsoft Teams, and specialized software like Embrace IEP, Blackbaud LMS, Impero, and Adobe.
  • Knowledge of IEP processes, service delivery, therapy techniques, crisis intervention, and clinical assessments.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workloads efficiently.
Physical Demands
  • Frequent sitting, standing, bending, walking, and driving; ability to climb stairs.
  • Occasional lifting/moving of objects or students over 40 pounds.
  • Ability to physically restrain students if necessary.
  • Good visual, hearing, and learning capabilities.
  • Participation in physical activities and potential physical intervention with students.
  • Continuous computer work requiring manual dexterity.
