Job summary

Amergis, formerly known as Maxim Healthcare Staffing, seeks an Educational Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and others within an educational setting.

Proficiency in American Sign Language is required, with degrees in interpreting or related fields preferred. The role requires meeting state and federal standards, CPR/health certifications as applicable, and working in schools under contract.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language is required.
  • Experience with deaf/blind students is preferred.
  • State Board Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate may be required per state regulation.
  • EIPA certificate may be required per state regulation or client requirement.
  • RID certification may be required per state regulation or client requirement.
  • Must meet all applicable professional standards of practice.
  • CPR current if applicable.
  • TB questionnaire/PPD or chest x-ray if applicable.
  • Current health certificate per contract or state regulation.
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Job description

The Educational Sign Language Interpreter is a trained professional who facilities communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and others within an educational setting. Often, American Sign Language (ASL) is used to interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa, which ensures students have accommodations to classroom instruction, activities and learning discussions.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language
  • Associates degree or Bachelors degree in interpreting, deaf studies or related field, preferred
  • State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate (as applicable)
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate (as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification ( as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
  • Current CPR if applicable
  • TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
