Job summary

Amergis in Biloxi, MS is seeking a School Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) for a contract, part-time role to support deaf or hard-of-hearing students in classroom settings using ASL. The interpreter facilitates communication between students, teachers and peers during instruction, activities and discussions.

The position requires ASL proficiency and appropriate interpreter credentials where required by state or district guidelines, with a pay rate of $35 per hour for about 20 hours per week.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language.
  • Associates degree or Bachelor's degree in interpreting, deaf studies or related field preferred.
  • State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate (as applicable).
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate (as applicable).
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification (as applicable).
  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice.
  • Current CPR if applicable.
  • TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable.
  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation).
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

The Educational Sign Language Interpreter is a trained professional who facilities communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and others within an educational setting. Often, American Sign Language (ASL) is used to interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa, which ensures students have accommodations to classroom instruction, activities and learning discussions.

Minimum Requirements
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language
  • Associates degree or Bachelors degree in interpreting, deaf studies or related field, preferred
  • State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate (as applicable)
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate (as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification ( as applicable per state regulation or client requirement)
