Job summary

New Bedford High School in New Bedford, MA is seeking a dedicated School Safety Officer to support a safe learning environment. You will patrol campuses, monitor behavior, respond to incidents, and coordinate with administrators and local police to maintain security during school hours and events.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with students in formal settings, CPR/First Aid and CPI training, and a High School diploma or equivalent.

Position:

  • School Safety Officer

Summary:

  • The School Safety Officer will support the academic process and setting by performing duties related to ensuring the safety and security of students and staff while on school grounds.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor student behavior and conduct during school time and at student events (passing periods, lunch periods, assigned periods, school and athletic events).
  • Patrols school buildings and grounds as directed to maintain safety and security and visibility.
  • Ensures appropriate pedestrian traffic patterns and flow along interior passageways and exterior walkways.
  • Responds to a variety of situations (alarms, safety and security concerns, suspicious activities, injuries, and accidents) in order to immediately resolve school safety and security issues.
  • Controls and diffuses disturbances before, during and after school hours, within school buildings, upon school grounds and along access and egress routes.
  • Monitors motor vehicle traffic issues around assigned facility, including but not limited to vehicle-free zones/building proximity, parking areas and speed.
  • Maintains logs, files, and prepares reports and/or other documentation related to security and/or safety including audit records.
  • As directed conducts readiness and emergency management plan protocol drills and reports on results as they relate to the established guidelines.
  • Conducts safety and security related audits at locations throughout the District as directed.
  • Participates in all District required training and professional development as scheduled.
  • Communicates with Supervisor, Building Administration, and/or designee as directed/required in regards to safety and security incidents and/or concerns.
  • Utilizes surveillance and communication systems to ensure School safety.
  • Ensures visitor access is controlled in accordance with District and building protocols.
  • Pre-qualifies vendors and/or external contractors and monitors accountability using registration (sign-in/-out), identification badge assignment, controlled access areas and passage routes throughout the facility.
  • Provides directions as needed as well as information regarding visitation policies and protocols to all visitors, authorized vendors and/or external contractors.
  • Provides security presence as directed at academic, athletic, and social events both during and after regular school hours.
  • Assists school resource (police) officers, local police, and fire safety officers as directed.
  • Communicated District expectations regarding safety and security to students and staff and/or visitors as directed.
  • Will work as a CPI responder and engage in all required training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with students and adult in an organized/formal setting preferred.
  • Experience working in a security and/or safety role preferred.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • CPI Trained or ability to acquire and maintain training as a user and/or a trainer.
  • CPR/First Aid certified or ability to acquire and maintain certification.
  • Ability to report to District locations as scheduled/directed.
  • Ability to understand and communicate information orally and in writing clearly, professionally and timely.
  • Ability to relate to all students, staff, visitors and the public in a diplomatic, tactful, and appropriate manner.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately and within District guidelines in unusual and/or emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Stand and/or walk the majority of the workday.
  • Frequently use hands and arms to handle food, equipment, and supplies.
  • Reach, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, push, pull, and lift as required.
  • Use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Repetitively lift and carry up to 40 pounds throughout the workday.
  • Work safely around commercial kitchen equipment, cleaning chemicals, and hot surfaces.
  • Work in varying temperatures, including freezers, refrigerators, kitchens, and outdoor conditions as necessary.
  • Communicate effectively in both typical office and busy cafeteria environments.
  • The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • The employee is regularly required to talk and hear in both an office environment and a loud environment.
  • Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing
  • Frequent fine motor use such as typing, filing, operating security camera equipment.
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, crawling as needed.
  • May utilize stairs, ramps, or be required to run.
  • May lift, push, pull up to and to exceed 60 lbs.
  • Will be required to utilize physical restraints as needed which will create an exposure to risk of injury.
  • Travel between school locations throughout the workday as needed.
  • May occasionally work in a variety of weather conditions including, heat, humidity, rain, wind, snow, cold temperatures.
