Position Title: School Safety Advisor

Reports To: School Principal

Classification: Non-Exempt / Classified

Position Type: Full-Time- 187 day contract 8 hours per day

Position Overview

The School Safety Advisor provides dedicated supervision and a visible, approachable safety presence throughout the school day and during school events. Working under the direct supervision of the School Principal , the Advisor acts as a proactive deterrent to unsafe behaviors, builds positive and trusting relationships with adolescents, and responds promptly to safety concerns.

Note: The School Safety Advisor does not replace administrators, counselors, nurses, teachers, or law enforcement officers, but supplements these roles by providing dedicated, non-punitive, and supportive campus supervision.

Primary Responsibilities

• Campus Presence & Supervision:
• Maintain a visible, approachable presence during high-traffic times including arrival, dismissal, passing periods, lunch, assemblies, athletic events, and other extracurricular functions.
• Monitor campus parking lots, hallways, stairwells, entrances, exits, common areas, and other identified areas of concern.
• Monitor the entrances and immediate vicinity of student restrooms and locker rooms while strictly respecting privacy and adhering to district rules regarding entry into gender-specific spaces.
• Assist with campus access control, emergency drills, reunification procedures, and the implementation of the school’s emergency operations plan.
• Safety Prevention & Incident Response:
• Help deter and identify vaping, alcohol use, marijuana use, possession of prohibited items, bullying, physical fights, vandalism, and other unsafe behaviors.
• Respond promptly to active safety concerns or medical incidents on campus.
• Apply conflict-resolution and de-escalation practices whenever appropriate to resolve tensions peacefully.
• Notify school administrators, the school nurse, counselors, parents/guardians, emergency medical services, or law enforcement as required by district policy or emergency circumstances.
• Student Support & Community Building:
• Build positive, respectful relationships with students to foster a culture of trust where students feel comfortable reporting safety concerns and seeking help before a situation escalates.
• Coordinate with teachers, administrators, counselors, school nurses, and other support staff to identify recurring safety issues and implement proactive solutions.
• Documentation & Compliance:
• Document all safety incidents accurately, thoroughly, and in a timely manner.
• Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with district policy, state laws, and federal regulations (e.g., FERPA).

Required Qualifications & Competencies

• Demonstrated Personal Attributes: Sound judgment, high integrity, strong professionalism, emotional calm under pressure, and a proven ability to build respectful relationships with adolescent students.
• Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Prior experience in school safety, youth services, security, emergency response, counseling support, or a closely related field is strongly preferred.
• Clearances: Must pass standard criminal background checks and background screenings as required by the district.

Mandatory Pre-Service Training

Before beginning duties, the School Safety Advisor must complete district-approved training in the following areas:

• Legal & Professional Standards: Student rights, privacy, confidentiality, and professional boundaries.
• Student Development: Adolescent development and trauma-informed practices.
• Behavioral Intervention: De-escalation, conflict resolution, and restorative practices.
• Substance Use & Medical Awareness: Recognition of vaping, alcohol impairment, marijuana use, overdose symptoms, and other medical emergencies.
• Emergency Response: First Aid, CPR, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification, lockdown/evacuation procedures, reunification strategies, and incident reporting.
• Safety & Prevention Protocols: Bullying, harassment, discrimination, and suicide-prevention protocols.
• Policy Implementation: Appropriate search guidelines, referrals, and evidence-handling under district policy.
• Equity & Inclusion: Cultural awareness, disability accommodations, and non-discriminatory practices.
