Job Summary
The School Resource Officer’s responsibilities include developing the best safety procedures for potential threats in the school and ensure the safety and well-being of the school administrators.
Principal Accountabilities
The following duties are typical for this classification. - Promote educational programs/activities to increase each student’s knowledge and respect for the law and law enforcement function.
- Understand school policies regarding how to distinguish disciplinary infractions to be handled by school officials versus criminal activity that warrants SRO involvement.
- Act swiftly and cooperatively when responding to disruptions and criminal offenses at school or on school grounds, such as disorderly conduct by trespassers; the possession and/or use of weapons on campus; the possession, sale, distribution or use of alcohol or controlled substances; rioting or dangerous demonstrations; serious acts of vandalism; etc.
- Be a liaison for the school, police and probation, and the community to keep all informed of activities of others who may be at risk or inclined to cause problems or commit crimes.
- Detaining or arresting students who are breaking the law regarding to drugs, bringing weapons to school, or making threats to the school.
- Maintain positive work relationships and contact with students to prevent juvenile delinquency.
- Establish genuine rapport between students, faculty and parents while being available to students, parents, and faculty before, during and after school.
- Encourage input from the school and community to inform ongoing policies that promote a safe and inclusive school environment.
- Assist in the development of a Safe School Plan and crisis preparedness guidelines for schools and provide a safe, healthy, and secure environment on and in the immediate proximity of the campus.
- Familiarize themselves with the many issues confronting students, e.g., alcohol and drug use, gang involvement, weapons, bullying, and teenage suicide.
- Provide routine marked police car patrol and foot patrol during the most critical times to discourage unlawful and antisocial behavior.
- Provide intelligence to police and school officials relative to gang or drug activities and enforcement.
- Use discretion in handling confidential material and information.
- Use the resources provided for the prevention, observation, intervention, investigation, and reporting of unlawful acts.
- Give educational presentations to student body, faculty, administration, and other school-based groups relative to laws, the role of law enforcement and other applicable subjects.
- As needed, SRO should attend meetings, assemblies, and classrooms as often as possible and work in cooperation with school officials in building positive relationships.
- Grow professionally through study and participation in professional activities, including recommended SRO trainings, including the Missouri POST required/recommended SRO training/certification.
- Performs work per established rules/regulations/post orders/specific instructions; receives general administrative directions.
Travel
Travel requirements will vary with the assignment.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Demonstrate ability to teach and engage with youth, such as past coaching or mentoring experience.
- Knowledge of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED)
- Knowledge of school safety technology in implementation K-12 school safety
- Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local codes used in pursuing and convicting perpetrators in the appropriate court
- Knowledge and skill of laws of arrest, probable cause and search and seizure issues used in the enforcement of laws and in the school setting
- Knowledge of law enforcement operations, duties, and responsibilities
- Knowledge of roads and addresses of the County
- SRO’s will be required to complete the P-5 or appropriate school-related law enforcement training
Experience & Education
- Must have two (2) years of work experience as a Patrol Officer, preferred Law Enforcement.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Possess a valid Missouri Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
- Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft (office & business) applications.
- Must successfully complete all components of the Deputy Sheriff’s Testing Process.
Supervisory Responsibilities
There are no supervisory responsibilities.
