POSITION PURPOSE

The School Registered Nurse provides comprehensive, continuous, coordinated, and individualized nursing care to all students in the Ennis School District and Madison Valley Medical Center patients as needed. Must work collaboratively with all Ennis School personnel, ancillary departments, and medical staff for the purpose of providing patient/student-centered care. Employee performs all duties in a manner consistent with the mission and values of MVMC.

General Responsibilities
  • Independently and completely performs a focused assessment to provide the most effective patient care.
  • Accurately assesses the patient's/family readiness to learn, organizes and executes an individualized patient teaching plan and evaluates the patient's understanding.
  • Independently develops, implements, and evaluates the patient plan of care that recognizes changes in the patient's condition and adapts the plan as needed.
  • Complete and maintain paperwork, both computerized and paper, pertinent logs, and all aspects of the electronic medical record (EMR) for completed documentation.
  • Perform other nursing and related hospital duties as necessary and requested.
  • Attends appropriate departmental meetings and seminars/training as designated.
  • Appropriate attendance for shifts and on-call responsibilities.
  • Communicates clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Clear understanding of MVMC policy and procedures.
  • Clear understanding and utilization of the Nursing Process.
  • Utilizes the computer correctly for basic functions (i.e., Time and Attendance, Email, Internet, EMR).
  • Acts as an advocate for the patient, including family/patient teaching.
  • Maintains an adequate skill level in providing safe and quality care to our patients.
  • Seeks out education opportunities independently.
  • Adheres to a high standard of personal and professional conduct.
  • Seeks constructive approaches to the resolution of workplace issues.
  • Responds positively to change, showing a willingness to learn new ways to accomplish work.
  • Contributes to a safe and secure environment for patients and staff by following established procedures and protocols as appropriate.

School Nurse Responsibilities
  • Provide health services to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning in the individual students.
  • Promote an optimal level of wellness of students by providing preventive health services to facilitate the students’ optimal physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development.
  • Manage current student health care plans, chronic health conditions and identify other potential conditions or disabilities and facilitate outside referrals as appropriate.
  • Advocates for safety by participating in the development of school safety plans to address bullying, school violence, and the full range of emergency incidents that may occur at school.
  • Triage clinical care for students and staff based on assessment of clinical presentation and physical assessment to determine appropriate level of care needed and implement first aid measures if indicated.
  • Assume responsibility for health planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and referral activities for students.
  • Implement and record required screening programs; notify parents when further medical evaluation is indicated.
  • Establish and update health and immunization records.
  • Prepare and maintain student clinic records and prepare required reports.
  • Administer daily and PRN (as needed) medications and nursing care procedures prescribed by the student's physician.
  • Initiate emergency procedures for students and staff as needed.
  • Develop Individual Health Care Plans for students on a case-by-case basis.
  • Teach specific medical procedures for the evaluation and maintenance of medically involved students.
  • Present, train and maintain appropriate infectious disease standards regarding contact with, and possible exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious body materials within the school or employment setting.
  • Provide health education and counseling.
  • Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
  • Act as a liaison between the school, family, and community health care providers.
  • Coordinate presentations by various agencies and professionals on pertinent health care topics for parents and school staff.
  • Maintain health equipment and supplies.
  • Follows the same daily schedule as the Certified Staff of Ennis School District
  • Recognizes and abides by Ennis School District Policies and Procedures
Requirements
Education, License/Registration, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Current Montana RN License
  • BLS (required upon hire).
  • Annual Safety Training and annual N-95 Mask Fitting.
  • Basic working knowledge of PC skills required.
Preferred Requirements
  • Two years’ experience practicing as an RN.
  • Experience in community health, clinic, or school setting working as an RN.

Non-Essential Functions: Attend workshops, seminars, and educational sessions to keep updated on changes in assigned area(s) of responsibility.

Noise level is quiet to moderate. Frequent keyboarding and repetitive movements.
