Job description

School Nurse

Reports To: Building Principal

FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt

Universal Obligations / Expectations of Each Staff Member

It is the expectation of the District that each staff member will: (1) put the safety, health and well-being of students at the forefront of all actions, job responsibilities and decisions, and (2) undertake all duties in alignment with the District's Strategic Plan.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for professional medical treatment of students.
  • Responsible for detection of physical problems as well as health evaluation.
  • Administers medication and treatment prescribed by health care providers.
  • Assists teachers in instructing and promoting programs on health and nutrition education and immunization.
  • Coordinates vision screenings.
  • Refers students and parents to primary care provider on health needs of individual students.
  • Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention.
  • Reports to parents, school personnel, health care providers, clinics and other agencies on student health matters.
  • Administers emergency aid to students and school staff in accordance with established first aid procedures.
  • Implements board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with communicable diseases.
  • Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
  • Educate and train staff on asthma, life threatening allergies, diabetes, and blood borne pathogens, among other health related topics.
  • Maintain AED's & AED manuals.
  • Educate and train staff on Heart Saver First Aid/CPR.
  • Maintain & monitor required school immunizations for new and incoming students either in IC & Individual Health record on MT State FORM No. IZ HES101.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to up-date immunizations when indicated.
  • Obtain initial student Health History and yearly Health updates.
  • Obtain consents for emergency medical treatment, access to immunizations and consent for over-the-counter medications.
  • Stock and keep up to date facility First Aid kits & field trip kits.
  • Maintain Exposure control plan & manual.
  • May establish health care plans for students with special health care needs and update them as needed.
  • Attend 504 meetings as team member.
  • Conduct COVID-19 testing.

Minimum Desired Qualifications

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand; twist at neck, bend at waist, reach; travel from building to other sites. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet environments.

Mental/Motor Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee rarely performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another).
