Job summary

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT in New Jersey is seeking a qualified school counselor to join its team. The role focuses on counseling students, assessing educational needs, and developing programs to support student adjustment and learning success.

The candidate will collaborate with teachers, administrators, and the Child Study Team, ensuring compliance with district policies and state requirements while promoting a supportive school climate.

Qualifications

  • Must hold NJ certification.
  • Strong communication, managerial and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of laws and legal requirements surrounding responsibilities.
  • Ability to function effectively in a diverse school community.
  • Aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to motivate and evaluate student intellectual, social and emotional performance.
  • Must meet criminal background check.
  • Must be reliable and of good moral character.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling relative to the student's personal adjustment and emotional health.
  • Assess the educational and psychological strengths and needs of the individual children in the cases assigned.
  • Consult with administration and staff regarding development of appropriate programs for prevention and early discovery of learning problems.
  • Work with classroom teachers and special education teachers in the solution of management problems of children with learning or adjustment disabilities.
  • Prepare reports of psychological evaluation and educational plans consistent with district policies.
  • Interpret implications of intellectual and personality findings and participate in educational planning for exceptional children.
  • Work cooperatively with other child study team personnel, teachers, counselors, speech therapists, nurses, physicians, supplemental teachers and staff to expedite referrals.
  • Work cooperatively with parents/guardians to expedite referrals within and outside the district.
  • Participate in solving classroom and school problems and seek resolutions through appropriate channels.
  • Function as an integral part of the Child Study Team.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local community groups to develop understanding and support for school objectives.
